Sideways coaster - ?

How cool would it be to develope a coaster where you ride sideways? Can you imagine going through a loop like that?

Think it will ever happen? It certainly would be a new design concept.
I think that certain laterl G's would be cool, just being pushed into the restraint,.

Yes, sounds cool
Do you mean sitting sideways (parallel to the ground) or sitting to the side of the track (but right side up)? Because if it's the first one, it sounds very uncomfortable to me. I think a lot of people would complain of headaches and neck aches afterwards.
Some people need a hobby. Sideways coaster? How the heck did you come up with that one? Sounds insane...

....I'd ride it.

...But that's just my opinion. Unless it's also someone else's.
I thought about that before, and how the layout of the cars would be. Here's the link to the thread.

I call it Project: Battery

It's primitive since the site doesn't allow picture inserts, but what are you gonna do?
Martling, I meant actually sitting sideways, as if you were looking at a side view of the coaster. For example, sitting facing the side of the track, with someone behind you facing the opposite side of the track. Imagine Face/Off, only rotate the cars 90 degrees on their vertical axis. I don't really see how it would hurt the neck anymore than facing forward or backward.

Brett, believe it or not, I do have hobbies. It's just that I waste too much time on the internet to pursue them, ha ha! Don't ask me how I thought of it, I just did. I really don't think it is any more insane than when they came out with the King Cobra. People thought "A STAND-UP coaster?!?! How crazy!" And before that, it was "The Bat" - I mean, a coaster where the track is overhead??? People have all kinds of ideas when something first comes out. Frankly, I thought they were nuts when they came out with Millenium Force. Why do people need to go that high? You have all kinds of coasters now. Sit down on top of the tracks, sit down below the tracks, stand up in the train, flying coasters, vertical coasters, floorless coasters, coasters that don't even have tracks, etc....Why not one where you sit facing sideways? I think it's a cool idea. I'm glad you would ride it!! ;) *** This post was edited by SilverWinds on 1/20/2001. ***
CPgenius -

I just read your post. It seems we had a lot of the same things to say! I actually thought about this concept some time ago - within the past several years. So hey - if you are wanting to design coasters, go for it. If you and I both thought of this individually, there may be others who have thought about it also. You could be the first one to design it!!
Yeah, I thought it was a cool idea when I thought it up, but I was under the influence of Metallica at the time (Why Jason--WHY!?!).

I think that I've addressed all the immediate problems due to G's. Possibly having restraints like King Cobra and have some very soft foam rubber on the back of the seats would mold to your body--especially the neck and head.

Like me for example!!! When I first became obsessed with roller coasters a couple of years ago, I drove my wife crazy drawing all sorts of wierd, and/or dumb ideas; this was one of them, although I never thought of having the seats hang off the sides like X (without the rotation of course; then again.....?); that would totally rock!
Okay - so warped minds think alike....er, I mean GREAT minds think alike. ;)

Now all we have to do is let a major coaster manufacturer know about our ideas!

Shhhhh! Or keep it quiet until I get all through school, become a mechanical engineer, and patent it myself. Try to keep it quiet. :)
I think that the G forces exerted on your neck would be painful. Obviously they wouldn't be any greater than a coaster where you sit facing forwards, but your neck is better able to handle the forces from front to back.

On front sitting coasters, you have a headrest behind thats absorbs some of the forces. By sitting to the side, the headrest would no longer work properly. This is probably the reason that when you get on a ride, that they tell you to keep your head back against the headrest at all times.

They could create a headrest that wraps around three sides of your head but that would seriously limit your visibility , be umcomfortable, and cause head banging.

When someone strains there neck it is usually due to a side to side motion.

All time Top 5: (1) Milleniun Force (2) Alpengeist (3) Hulk (4) Ice Dragon (5) Raptor
A soft foam rubber would prevent head banging and uncomfortability.
