Shoot the Rapids: "The boats didn't fit the flumes"

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Cedar Point is still opening Saturday, but its new Shoot the Rapids attraction won't be along for the ride. Engineering problems with the ride -- the boats the passengers ride in were too long and didn't fit the flume -- forced the park to delay the ride's debut by two weeks.

I think it is an absolutely FAB idea of a ride mixing water, electric pumps below the riders seat and built by Intamin! Maybe getting zapped in the boat while parked in the station is part of some retro experience bringing back elements of fun houses from long ago? They are so clever. I would even go one step further and add cattle prods to the ride's theming somehow : )

You should probably learn how electric stuff works before pretending you do. :)

Hell, I'm thinking learning how anything works before complaining about it is probably a good start.

You must be new here.

Nah, I just really don't like IntaminHater, errr, that guy.

djdaemon, my brother is a construction engineer with his own company so I am not really as clueless as you might think. Raven-Phile, who says I am Intaminhater? You don't think some of the jokes we make on here haven't already been told around the offices at Cedar Fair parks?! Wise up guys, everyone is just making fun of the funny, nothing more or less. Intamin makes it so easy! Frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing some sparks mixed with Starlight........oh never mind since nobody can take a joke.

...you really do have to wonder exactly what is going on between Dick and Sandor that Cedar Fair continues to purchase dysfunctional rides from Intamin. What is the secret love fest between them???

I've wondered about this myself. I can tell you with certainty that there are general park general managers who will never work with that guy again.

Does anyone know if the ride was inspected and opend today?

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

@Jeff, have you heard anything as far as why parks in the US shy away from purchasing from Mack? BEC and Universal did but otherwise they seem to be shut out of this market and looking at their catalog they have some really decent product offerings. I have wondered the same about S+S lately, the Screaming Swing had several installations that I thought were successful, and then it went dead as well. What gives, anyone know????

I rarely hear any comments about Mack one way or another. The parks that have their mice seem to be satisified with them.

Why do I think the original Shoot The Rapids will prove to have been a better ride! They should have just rebuilt that one and included the old smelly lake water!

Rollbackdog

If you want smelly lake water, you can ride Thunder Canyon.

Or you can ride thunder canyon,or snake river falls, and get just as wet as you can on shoot the rapids.

I think the pump thing is a stall/diversion tactic to cover up the real issue, the boats size. I have a garden pond pump that operates at 1200gph or 20gal/min. It's 3/4 the size of a 5 gal pail. So I think this issue would take a day or two to resolve. I don't necessarily think it added more time to the delay. But who knows..I'm still trying to figure out why the mechanical flapper was abandoned in the first place

Intamin seems to overthink things.

If they would just stick with the true and tried, maybe they would not have so many problems.

Maybe they installed the pumps backwards, and they're actually putting water into the boats, instead of draining them. :)

Interesting that he calls the boats prototypes. What are those things that were swimming around at Holiday World all last year?

That was the Indiana prototype. this is the Ohio prototype. ;-) I think they said the same thing about Top Thrill Dragster even though they already had Accelerator.

Not that it's even close to being on the same level of comparison. But, if I'm not mistaken, even though NASA has had several shuttles and they have been operating for a long time now, they are all still considered experimental vehicles.
