SFStL or SFOMA?

So I've always called and heard it referred to as Six Flags St. Louis and the Six Flags website says that also, but a lot of people who're local to the area call it Six Flags Over Middle America and say that that's what it's called in the park on all the signs.

Anyone shed some light on this?

SFStL was originally known as Six Flags over Mid-America.  Back around 1998 or so they changed the name to Six Flags St. Louis.  I'm not sure why they decided to change the name, but I'd guess it has somthing to do with a common question they received:  "Where's Six Flags over Mid-America??"

The park now known as SFStL was originally called "Six Flags over Mid-America while under Time-Warner.  I don't know exactly when the name change happened, but it was around the time Premier bought the chain.  Most likely it was that purchase that resulted in the new name.

Now the question is if anybody knows the reason *why* it was changed.  The only thing I can think of is that Six Flags over Mid-America isn't very specific location-wise, but then again neither is SFGAm, SFGAdv, SFMM, SFWoA, etc.

The name was changed a few years ago.  It was for the longest time SF Over Mid-America.  Now it's just SFSTL.   I personally like the new name a bit better.  There's so many "America's" in the SF chain. Maybe that's whey they changed it. (?)  SFSTL kinda focuses onSt. Louis the city (even though the park isn't in the city itself..it's about 40 miles from the city if I recall distances correctly).  I don't think we'll see other SF parks changing their names to the cities they're near.  Can't imagine hearing Six Flags Louisville or Six Flags Twinsburg!

I was just thinking about the Six Flags over Mid-America thing the other day. I looked at one of my books about roller coasters and saw that name. Later I was looking online and through other books for SFoMA. It was absolutely mind boggling not being able to find anything about it. Soon enough I found it changed it's name to Six Flags St. Louis.

Joey: maybe not cities but states. I've heard rumors about GAdv becoming SF New Jersey and the is a big honking sign @ SFMM that says Six Flags California.

Oh and if 'america' was such a troubling moniker why would they give that to the former Adventure World park?

2hostyl, I've heard the talk about SFNJ, and here's my take:  WHY would they want to remind people they're in Joisey.  I mean, I grew up there, and the gray skies, the rain, the cold, the traffic! (circles?), noone wants to be reminded.  Even the state university is called Rutgers...what state doesn't name THE state "U" after the state?  They'd have a better bet with "Six Flags WhaddYOUwant"...

Six Flags New Jersey would at least prevent confusion as to what SFGA means on these boards.
Where did you grow up in NJ? Its january and 70 degrees out! South Jersey is lovely.

SFSTL actually would sound pretty cool if it was named after the town from its address:  Six Flags Eureka!

That's better than SF Valenica, Jackson, Gurnee, Aurora, Arlington, Vallejo, etc., etc., anyway. :)

You can't spell "dishonorable" without "honorable."

I'll have to defend New Jersey, because I spent many a family vacation in Stone Harbor (about 10 miles from Wildwood), and it's a really nice resort community. I think like any state, there are your good parts, and your not so good parts of town.
Six Flags California = SFMM + Hurricane Harbor

Six Flags Mid-America = SFStL + Hurricane Harbor

Last year, I visited SFGAdv.'s Animal Safari, and if I recall, on the bottom corner of the map, it said somthing about the complex having 3 Worlds of Adventure, with a very SFWoA like logo.
Just thought that was interesting.

They probably changed it because there are now 4 SF parks in "Mid-America". When it was built, it was the only SF park in the Midwest. SFStL is a lot more accurate now.

Yeah but Nate Hurricane Harbor is included in admission in the missouri park, but not the Cali park.

concerning the whole name change thing, it really depends on what park you're talking about.  if you name parks based on their location, it could be good.  they have a certain ring to them, but that takes away from any theming that is placed in the park.  I think that Six Flags Chicago doesn't really hold the feel that Great America does.  sure, it tells you right where it is, but considering its theming I think that GA is a better name.  now something like Elitch's could go either way.  Six Flags Denver or Colorado is an all right name for the park, but locals( at least the one's I met) don't even use the Six Flags name.  plus Elitch Gardens makes the park sound so much more beautiful than SF Denver.

When I was at SFSTL last summer there was a sign inside that had some history on it, and it still said Six Flags over Mid-America. As for the name change, I always liked the older name better, but it's not like it matters that much. As stated before, it's probably easier for the park to have a specific location in its name.

B&R:TC...I grew up in Middlesex/Greenbrook area.  Really nice neighborhoods as a kid, but overall I'll take FL on a bad day over Joisey on its best.  I have a sister that still lives up there, so apparently not everyone agrees with me...LOL.

Six Flags New England also has a nice ring too it.  (Maybe because I associate it with S:ROS;))  Much better than Six Flags Agawam or Six Flags Springfield or Six Flags Massachusetts.

But they should've called it six flags ultimate escape flight over great america's adventure world.
