SFoG-worth the trip?

Next weekend, the Mrs. and I are going to take a trip to a Six Flags park, but we haven't decided which one. The choices are probably SFGAdv, SFDL, SFA, SFStL, or SFoG. Keep in mind that I've never been to any of these parks.

Seeing as how I live in Columbus, OH, SFDL would be the shortest trip, by far, but it also seems to have the least to offer. SFA would be next shortest, but I've been on X-Flight, and if I wanted to ride S:RoS I'd make the shorter trip to SFDL. SFStL seems tempting with Mr. Freeze and The Boss, but it also seems like I could hit that at next year's SRM.

So, essentially, it's coming down to GAdv or SFoG-GAdv simply for Nitro (RB and AC are my two favorite coasters), and SFoG for S:UF. My question is: is S:UF different enough from X-Flight to make it worth the 8 hour drive? Are there enough good coasters/attractions there to make a whole day out of the park? I'm leaning towards SFoG just because I want to ride the only stateside B&M flyer, but if GAdv is a better overall park, I might wait on S:UF and make it part of a southern U.S. trip next year.

I'm not trying to make a versus thread, I'm just asking for opinions-thanks!

No love for the whiners

I'd go with GAdv for now. Yes, SFoG is really only good for S:UF. Think about it: You said Raging Bull is one of your favorites, so you've been to SFGAm. SFoG is nearly SFGAm with the exception of Mind Bender and S:UF. GAdv has much more variety so put SFoG until next year.

I've been to two of the parks you're asking about - SFStL and SFoG. You've got the right idea with SFStL. It's a nice park and Boss and Freeze rule, but I wouldn't go all the way form OH just for this park alone. Make it part of another trip, and you're golden.

I can not recommend SFoG highly enough, and I haven't even been on S:UF yet. Out of the six Six Flags parks I've been to, this one is my favorite. It seems more like an "amusement park" to me than a "theme park." It's very pretty and the coaster collection (wood and steel) is excellent. The only fault I have with the park is the lack of flats, but that's a pretty minor gripe.

If you go to SFoG, e-mail me. I'll hook you up with some coupons.

I'd say it's pretty much a toss-up between those two...if you are a "woodie", SFoG has a LOT more to offer....if not, they're about even, with Nitro being the best Beemer out there (IMO, of course). S:UF is really cool, and the pretzel loop is INTENSE...but the ride is really a "one-trick pony". Both have beautiful landscaping, SFGAdv has way better flats - when they're open, SFoG is cleaner and friendlier....both are top-tier parks.....

Go to SFOG. S:UF is awsome, the woodies are defenately a must do, scorcher is small, but packs a punch, deja vu is awsome (when its open and a short wait), Batman is a clone, but still alot of fun and newer, Mindbender is an awsome Schwatskopf (sp?) and the loops and dives on it are one of the best. Acrophobia is the best freefall ride in the world. And it is a nice park with lots of trees and is very good to go to. Ninja can be bad, but sometimes it dosent hurt. And the mine train is a fun relaxing family ride.

My girlfriend and i wer at SFoG last weekend, and everything was okay except it was CROWDED. So crowded to the point where we just said screw it and rode the Mindbender all day. Superman was a 2-2 1/2 hour wait on Friday and Deja Vu was 2 hours. If you do go, I would plunk down the 30 bucks for the Lo-Q thing. Unless you dont mind standing in 100 degree heat for hours at a time.

Good luck! :)

Can someone please give me a job somewhere in Ohio?

In your situation, I would go to SFoG. SFGadv might very well add a coaster next year, where as SFoG will in all probability not. I have been to SFGAdv and it is one of my favorite parks, but given the chance to go to SFoG this year I would, holding off on SFGadv until later. A flyer, good wood, and a crazy drop tower. SFGadv is B&M happy (positive), and has a good collection of flats. Does not really matter though, both parks are great.

I would head to SFOG. They've got 3 great steel coasters, Mindbender, Superman:Ultamate Flight and DeJa Vu (when open) and 2 great woodies, The Georgia Cyclone and The Great American Scream Machine. They also have the Scorcher, Ninja, and the Dahlonega Mine Train, which are all fun too.

It is also one of the most beautiful parks in the country, trees are everywhere. Its kept clean too.

I have never been to SFGrAdv, but I will say that, IMO, SFOG is good even if you don't think about SUF. Deja Vu runs pretty good now, Acrophobia is one of a kind, Mindbender is great, Cyclone is insane. Scorcher is a short but sweet stand up. If you've been on one BTR you've been on them all, but hey it's there.

I wish I could tell you if we are going to get something else next year, then it would make sense to just hold off until then. I really don't know if we will or not.

But that's my take on the issue. Either way, though, you can't lose.

Even though SFgadv is my home park they are geting a flying coaster next year so go to SFog for Acrophobia Deja Vu and Superman.

Well, I've been to both SFOG and Great Adventure, and I loved both. I see your dilemma - each park offers a totally different ride experience.

The big reasons to go to Great Adventure (IMO) are NITRO and The Chiller. Medusa is great too.

Go to SFOG for Superman, Deja Vu, Acrophobia and the Scorcher.

I would go to SFOG, since you might not be able to take the drive later on.

One thing everyone seems to forget about SFOG is the incredibly crowded lines. I have been 6 times in 3 years(never on a Saturday), I usually stay all day, and the lines are horrible. If you go before mid-June or after the end of August it is pretty good, but July and the beginning of August are A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY. You can backtrack, walk to every coaster repetedly and you will not get on every coaster more than once. I went 2 weeks ago and only rode 6 things.

NOTE: I have not had much experience with other six flags parks so I can not compare the waits to other major six flags parks.

If you can't stand lines, rent a Q-Bot!

SFOG has it for 8 of there 9 coasters.

Hey Bill, don't forget this green coaster they have there hidden in the woods that SUCKS!

Brian, who only put that to needle you for calling S:UF a "one trick pony". Heh. How've you been stranger?

Why do we fear Mack trucks, but not Mack Wild Mouse coasters?

Wait, are you saying mindbender sucks? Because if you are, I would like to know why because that is one of the best older rides they have.

Yes...SFOG is worth the trip, and it's a great park. If you go on FRI, SAT, or SUN the crowds will be very large. A Q-bot is a great deal if you are visiting for your first time, as the crowds can get bad even on weekdays. S:UF is a one-of-a-kind experience which is much simpler, more reliable, more comfortable experience than the Vekoma FDs. Yes, Deja Vu is now running great, and the overall coaster collection plus Acrophobia is great.

-----------------
My two favorite coasters are named Superman.
Nitro, Gemini, Laser, Ice, Thunder...The American Gladiators!

SFoG is by far the most crowded park I have ever been too. The only time its not too bad is early May/April... or late in the year before October. Mornings are best b/c Atlantans like to sleep in, by noon on a summer day don't excpect waits to be any shorter than 30minutes all the way around.

It's not the best park, by far, and not the cleaniest either, but it is fun. The rides are enjoyable... especially Mindbender, S:UF, and Scorcher.

edh, don't sweat it, Homey G is just trying to "get" me for not specifically singling out the best steel coaster at SFoG (but I did mention the "new" coaster by name).... Scorcher is the best stand-up not in SoCal, and MINDBENDER is simply awesome.....you can't see both loops at once from anywhere....landscaping and great green steel mesh with an Anton design and terrific theming, and really "minimalist" supports to make your mind.....bend..... The wood is really good, well-maintained, esp. for a SF park.

The employees beat all other SF parks hands-down.....Hi MisterX...

P.S. doing well, heading to HP/Dutcvh Wonderland, working in PKD Tues. nite and maybe even SFA....if Jill can be "assuaged"...;)
