SFO- A Gloomy Report 06/10/00

Associated parks:
None

I was out at SFO today 06/10/00 and as usual went home unhappy and early, very early. I was not intrested in the park itself but the water park. We started off by going to the wave pool for some fun. We were in it for about 30 minutes and decided to get out and see what other water things that they had. We went to the inner tube river which had a VERY LONG AND SLOW line. In order to go down the river you were required to have a inner tube. The problem is they only had maybe 30 inner tubes for this attraction, and about 60 people wanting to go in the river. First of all, they were horribly under stocked on the inner tubes, plus you can go around the river as many times as you like without getting off, thus making people wait forever in the sun and 90 degree heat! They need to have a better process like Soak City at CP were everyone can get in with many inner tubes on hand.

We went on the slides which we did not have a problem with, but when we got back to the wave pool they had evacuated everyone out of it. As we were walking around most of the day it seemed that they kept letting people in the wave pool and having everyone evacuated about every 30 minutes or so. Finally I got around to asking one of the lifeguards why they would not let anyone in. She said that someone pooped in the wave pool, but she said the four letter word that begins with "s" right in front of a lot of little kids. Classy. Nice Job. First of all, they kid who decided to take care of business should of known better or told his or her parent they had to go, and the lifeguard should have known better than to shout out the "s" word so the world can hear it including little kids. Now I know how Jeff felt at CP when those kids urinated of of MF's ramp.

Other things that aggravated me was how they make you take rest piriods every half-hour for about 20 minutes from the wave pool, and how they charge you money to use an inner tube in the wave pool. They charge you for tube use in the wave pool? Unreal. That crosses the line from capitalism to greed. It's sad that people will pay it.

Yep! $4 all day for a inner tube for the wave pool. I passed it up of course.

Forgot to mention one other thing. I went with my cusion, brother, and my 7yr old nephew. Most of the day my cusion and I did the water park while my brother and neph. did the rest of the park. I just got off the phone with him and since he doesn't have a comp. I will speak on his behalf. He said that all of the rides that my nephew could go on were shut down all day. My nephew is under 48" tall which means he could only ride the shut down small rides. Then he went on the new kiddy coaster which ended up getting stuck on the lift and had to be evacuated. My brother and neph. were just as P.O. as my cusion and I.
Just for the record, charging for tubes in the wave pool is a common thing. I've seen it at Wet and Wild in Orlando, Mountain Creek in Jersey, SFO, Dorney, and others.
NO NO NO, Dorney doesn't charge for tubes in the Wave pool, atleast not in the past 4 years I've worked in the foodstand right in front of the wave pool. Cedar Fair wants to treat the guests well enough so they return, which I don't think is SFO's prerrogative.

OK, I may have been mistaken about Dorney, but I've seen the tube charge at several different places including a water park 25 minutes from my house-Roaring Springs. You think charging for a tube is cheap? Well, at Roaring Springs, they don't even have cubbyholes for you to put your towels and shoes in. You have to spend $3 to put it in a plastic bag which they store for you. That's really cheesy.
Just a note about the Lazy River and the tubes:

1) Yes, the line moves slowly, but contrary to what Vince said, individuals who do NOT have their own rented tubes can not ride it for as long as they want. One lap with a ride tube- as long as you want with a rented tube. That's a big difference.

2) Renting out tubes isn't that uncommon actually. They've done it for years and it shouldn't shock anyone- just so ya know. Now at least it's more than just the wave pool where the tubes can get you some worth.

3) I agree- not enough 'park sponsored' tubes on the lazy river. Though I do feel the park is doing this to encourage folks to rent tubes of their own.

4) Side note- I believe there are some coupons in the SF season pass coupon book that can save you some scratch on the tubes.

I like the waterpark and I like what they've done with it- how they laid it out. One thing that's going to be a problem is having only one employee at the main stand where they dole out the locker keys. THAT, is a legitimate beef and they better increase the help at that place or all kinds of folks will grow frustrated.

this is kind of changing the subject but isnt it annoying when you rent a tube and someone steals it. I hate that
Jason you make a very good point. That's why I didn't rent one. Didn't want to run the risk.
Jason brought up:

"this is kind of changing the subject but isnt it annoying when you rent a tube and someone steals it. I hate that..."

YES- incredibly annoying. That's why we came up with a funny kind of solution.

1) Take about four feet of standard fishing line (10-20 pound test is best- and there's a reason :)).

2) Tie each end of the line to fishing clasps or two leaders so that you can interlock them.

3) If you need to leave your tube for any reason at the park, simply drop one end of the line through the center of the tube and wrap around the leg of your nearbye plastic lounging chair.

4) Tell some of the folks around your seat that you'll be back soon and hopefully they can help watch your tube.

We used this little technique in the summer of 98' and NEVER came back to find our tube gone. Once I even saw a young punk try to swipe the thing, and this is where the nearly invisible fishing line comes in.

The kid looked around for a sec, slowly strolled over to the tube, bent down, grabbed it and tried to walk off. He got about a step away from the chair when he was yanked back- like a dog running out of chain- and didn't know what the hell was going on. He looked back down at the chair for a second in bewilderment and quickly changed his mind.

He dropped the tube and walked away ... briskly.

We laughed.

Cool thing about it all is that you can nab the kids you catch because rather than being turned away by something they can see they think they can just walk away without noticing the line.

Plus it's cheap, it's fun to watch if you catch one, the line easily fits into any pocket, it's reusable each time you rent a new tube- and it WORKS!

I call it 'fishing for punks'.

You should try it sometime.
