SFMM ?'s for people who have been to SFMM & SFGAm

I checked out the Six FLags website and it did not say when the offseason was. I was wondering when the offseason is?

I am going for the first time to SFMM and I think I may be pressed for time. So I was wondering what I should go on(rollercoasters) and what I could skip. I think I may skip Deja Vu and Batman. Other than that, I do not know much about SFMM except that I have been longing to go there!

V2 can't be compared to any of the rides in SFGAm!The Vertical Drop was amazing!

If I'm not mistaken, SFMM is open year round, I don't really understand if that's what your asking though.

Here is where you can find out days of operation, and hours of operation. After this week SFMM goes to weekends, but sometime in the spring it will go back to everyday.

Things a bear-y fine, ridin' on the old Knott's bear-y line!

I went to SFMM in January last year (day of the Rose Bowl) and it was dead. I walked on X!

Just keep checking SFMM calendar for their hours. I need to do that too because my lovely wife and I are planning on hitting SFMM in January.

As for the coasters, IMHO:

Batman: The Ride. Can skip it if you've done SFGAm or other clone.

Colossus: Looks good, rides bad. I'd skip it.

Deja Vu: See B:TR above.

Gold Rusher: Not too bad for a mine ride. It's worth a lap.

Psyclone: P.O.S. Enough said.

Revolution: We rode it for the nostalgia. Very rough.

Superman: The Escape: Not as exciting as it seems on the TV shows. But worth a ride anyway.

Viper: Not a bad looper. Much better than Shockwave.

Riddler's Revenge: An incredible stand-up. Even my wife liked it and she usually dislikes stand-ups.

Goliath: My #2 steel coaster (MF is #1). This is a fantastic coaster. A must ride.

Rides not ridden and why:

Ninja: closed. Flashback: closed. X: closed.

Canyon Blaster: kiddie. Goliath Jr.: kiddie.

That's my evaluation. Of course, you can ride everything if you want the count.

dido on DEK's remarks the only thing i can add is Ninja is worth at least one go around due to its unique ride. i really enjoyed it.

i must say the only other thing i sugest is use the tram way(or what ever it is called) to get to the top of the hill or you will be out of breath by the time you get there.

You were also there for the Passholder's Preview - that's not exactly the same thing as normal operation - the GP couldn't go on at that time.

Jed:

SFMM is basically weekend-only (some Fridays) operation starting the second week of September through Spring Break, except for holiday periods and special events, like Fright Fest, when they are also open on Fridays. Like MF6279 says, check their operations schedule. The operating hours are also shorter - usually from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. most days, except Fright Fest, when they are open until 10:00 p.m. Fri - Sun. If you don't have a season pass, and can get there one of the first two weekends in December, they have a toy drive and you can get in free if you bring a new, packaged, unwrapped toy valued at $10.00 or more. January and February are fairly quiet months for the Mountain, but like I said, the operating hours are shorter, but you can still get on quite a few rides during the 8 hours they are open.

DEK has a good synopsis of the rides, except you have to try Psyclone at least once for the experience, and Colossus is a fun woodie even tho' it's a little old.

If you missed Flashback when it was at SFGAm a long time ago (as Z-Force) & it is ever running again.. you might wanna ride it just to ride it. I was there about 7yrs ago and tried to ride any ride i couldnt ride @ SFGAm.. also rode Flashback just for memory
How busy should the first weekend in Dec be?? Im going on the first Sunday. What should my plan of attack be other than riding X first??
X then dejavu then superman than whatever you want.

I got to ride Flashback as Z-Force (better name if you ask me) at SFGAm and I liked it then. I was hoping to ride it at SFMM to see if it's as bad as everyone says. Maybe it will be open when I go in January.

I might agree with riding Psyclone and Colossus for the count or just the experience; however, Psyclone was soooooo bad I just don't know. Maybe I'm being overly critical because it looks so much like my favorite ride, Viper (SFGAm), that I expected much, much more from it.

That was the MAIN reason we all wanted Goliath Jr.....NO SALE!

Oh, and Psyclone...is SO horrible I wouldn't use it to start a BarBQ...worst coaster I've ridden BY FAR....so bad, I ride it just to see if it'll fall apart....AWFUL....honestly, the ONLY wooden coaster that would have to be torn down for something rideable to come out of it....IMHO, even Jeff Hammersly would call it "a lost cause"...it's fun to ride just to see if you can come away "unscathed"....

edit: Ninja and Canyon Blaster are the two "surprise hits"....Gold Rusher is a good mine ride, and NEVER fail to ride Log Jammer at night....short lines, long dropS!

IMO Goliath is a piece of crap, For it's height, it should at least be 500 feet longer.

I totally agree that Viper is better than Shockwave, Shockwave is way too rough. Viper is as smooth a baby's bottom.

On Riddler, DON'T sit in the back. It totally messed up my back. But, it's definatly worth a ride.

I'll bet it messed up your back sitting in Riddler. Especially considering it's a stand-up. :)

I am going January 3, so i'm assuming from what you said that it will be open?

I planned on going on Flashback because it was at SFGAm and I didn't get the chance to ride it.

I thought Psyclone would be good? It looks so much like SFGAm's Viper. Does it even offer a good experience?

Do they race Colossus? I would like to try it! It looks fun.

What is Gold Rusher? What is the layout of Revolution?

Is Superman: TE at all good?

Is Viper way smoother than Shockwave? Does Viper give you a headache?

Is Riddler's Revenge smoother than Iron Wolf? I love Iron Wolf but it is so rough! Does Riddler's Revenge give you a headache at all?

I will definitley try X and Goliath! Can you guys give me more comments on Ninja, Flashback, Gold Rusher, and Revolution because I have no idea what to think about those rides? Feel free to give me comments on the other rides because the more info I have, the better I can see what I should do!

I also need to know one important thing! Can I still use my SFGAm season pass in January at SFMM?

-----------------
V2 can't be compared to any of the rides in SFGAm!The Vertical Drop was amazing!

No....you can't use your Six Flags Great America season pass in January. The final date to use your Great America season pass is December 31st I believe.

-----------------
Cornball Express- America's first stand up woodie.

I was at SFMM in 2001 so I'll give you my opinions on those certain rides you request.

Psyclone looks promising but the B&M wood coaster trains do not track well. It rides about the same as the park's Colossus, which would be better with better trains and some retracking.

Flashback was closed. I had hoped to ride this unique coaster.

Ninja is a pretty good suspended coaster IMO and is a nice ride along the hillside. You pass it on the way to S:TE.

Gold Rusher was a surprisingly good mine train though the only problem is once the train gets going, there is a lift hill to stop the flow. I do think it has three lifts.

Revolution, oh how I wish I could have ridden this before the massacre. This ride has such a great layout but those damn OTSR's the park added really ruin what could easily be a top ten coaster. But ride it for nostalgia's sake and for the fact that you've seen it in many movies and TV shows.

Jed, just shut up and go ride the freakin coasters! For the love of God quit asking so many questions and just ride the darn things.

Oh, that hill that was mentioned is cake, unless your some lazy, good for nothing out of shape slob. My 60yr old mom makes it up the hill no problem, geez lets get some exercise people.

LONG LIVE ARROW DYNAMICS!!
Have I only ridden 113 coasters?

Mamoosh's avatar

Jed - yes; no; rarely; Arrow Mine Train; up lift, down 180* curving drop, down drop with slight turn to left, down another drop and into a ascending 270* turn, down a ramp, into the loop, ascending/descending figure 8 with a tunnel, helix, brake run; depends on who you ask; yes; sometimes; definitely; no; best suspended in the west; a waste of steel; fun mine train; was better before OSTRs; your pass will expire Dec 31st.

Jed, here's my answers to your questions:

1. I don't know for sure but believe it will be open.

2. No. It's a horrible experience.

3. They didn't race Colossus when we were there.

4. Gold Rusher is your basic Mine Ride.

5. Find some pictures of Revolution to see the layout. Try rcdb.com

6. S:TE is just OK. I was expecting more because of all the TV exposure.

7. Viper is way better than Shockwave and I didn't get a headache.

8. Riddler's Revenge was fantastic. Smooth and powerful.

9. I rode Revolution for the nostalgia (first looping coaster) but will never ride again. My lovely wife and I both had to put our hands between our ears and the OTSRs to stop the headbanging.

10. I don't believe your pass will be good in January.

To Revolutionary: I felt compelled to answer. ;)
