Hey everybody, I just figured out how SFGRAMBoy knows everything about SFGAm! He's Wintrode, didn't ya know!? I guess we were all right, high-ups do visit this site! That is the only way he can know everything about the park!

Hi! I'm Hungry, whats your name?
Phoenix,
Hay Baler was, I believe, a Matterhorn type ride with a big bale of hay in the center.  I don't know what happend to SFGAm's, but it lasted from 1977-1999.  The shed was dismantled during the 2000 season.  The ride disappeared before then, but if you look at the 2000 ride guide for Six Flags Ohio, their Hay Baler has been "Newly Themed."  Concidence?  You decide!  It was hidden by Sky Whirl which could account for low ridership, but Big Top was hidden and now the queue lines can be full for it.  I never rode it until 1987 until a friend pointed it out.  There has been a rumor that it will return next season.  But it is just a rumor until either No Coaster Con or the start of the next season.

kcies,

On the gas station, frankly, I don't remember it, but I have confirmation of it in 1982, and 1986-1988.  On the '89 map, the symbol is there, but it is blank instead of saying "Gas."  And at least in 1986 and 87, SFGA had a tram system in the parking lot.  Another thing I don't recall, but that is why I keep so much GAm stuff lying around the house!

kick,

The last year the root beer stand was open was 1996 selling Flags Root Beer.  Our park had some unique touches to it, but I still think the green track of the log flumes is rather unattractive!

What was on the location of "The Tidal Wave" when the park first opened and through 1977?

- No one answered that yet, and I have no clue as to what stood there.  Help would be appreciated :)
-----------------
Tidal Wave... Sky Whirl... what's next... Whizzer?

Great America jingle chorus:

Time after Time, Great America, Have the time of the time of your life

The verse went something like: you can (forgot words), ride in space, jump and shout, let it all out, and then come back for mooooooore (image of twicket on screen).

Repeat Chorus

You know I would have thought you would have given up on your personal attacks on me after your embarassment with the SFOG coaster...oh yeah...I was right, thats right. Check RCDB or look at any pics...they support what I said from the beginning.  Of course, you being only 16 and jealous because you don't know anything continue to try and slander me, it is getting rather old. (btw, you really impress people by knowing his name, for real, it does..woo woo!)

Hey, take a joke. It wasn't an attack, and I wasn't embarassed about the SFoG thing. And just out of curiosity, why are you bringing up SFoG here? Is it the best you've got?

OK The Tidal Wave was on the present  Batman The Ride site and Davey's Dingys was a boat ride that was kinda like the Whirlygig , but, it only went up and down and around. I believe the boats were red and yellow? When the ride stopped and the boats came back down to the ground the ground itself unlocked the lap bars. It was kind a cute ride, and it was located next to where Iron wolf is but Iorn wolf wasn't there and neither was Zforce. Does anyone remember this ride? You have to be my age to remember. Oh yeah SFGRAM Boy20... GREAT Job!!  Oh Yeah.. The Hay Baler was the same ride as the Flying Bobs ride that you se at alot of fairs. Also the kiddie Bee ride( the name escapes me now) was next to Davey's Dingys. I remember this stuff like it was yesterday because my mom and dad took us kids there on opening day back 1976. My dad loved the place, just like me!

Beer, My Baby, and Coasters. Is this a great country or what?

Bull fan,
That is pretty close to what I remember for the lyrics.  It has been at least 15 years since I last saw the commerical so don't take this word for word.  I recall two versions for the two seasons it was used

EDIT: This is one piece of trivia that I have to rely on my brain.  Everything else I have documented somehow. I don't have the original TV spot on tape, just in my head.

Does anyone have that song and the Demon song, so i can remenisce? Or however you spell it..lol.

Beer, My Baby, and Coasters. Is this a great country or what? ;)

Yeah, I know its scary! LOL  I don't know how it started, but every year I went to camp, I had to sing the Great America jingle at lunch time.  I even had backup singers who were in our cabin!  This must have been about the mid 80's.  When the second version came out, I had requests for both at the same time.  I think we encored with Scooby Doo, Where are you? or Brady Bunch.  Ah memories, I'm still embarrassed to this day!  heh...heh

stoogemanmoe, someone over on r.r.c. has part of it in their sig  something like "little did we know we had miss our payments on TOTC and our coaster was repossessed!"  I tried to listen to it last year, but the sound quality is not very good.  This year I didn't hear SFGAm play it the three times I was there for Fright Fest.  Also, this year the waterfall was off for Fright Fest, I guess because of a faulty water pump.

Root Beer was so cheap at the Hot Shoppe, because that was the original store opened by Mr. Marriott that started his empire.  It was a tribute to the humble beginnings of the Marriott Corp.

I look back in fondness at what Great America used to be. It was such a great place to go in the late 70s and early 80's. The park was so much more simple and true to it's theming. The park staff was extremely friendly. I remember not wanting to do anything, but run rides at Great America when I was young. I memorized everyone of the spiels they used to say at the various rollercoasters of that time.

Now, the crowds are way too big, there are too many attractions packed into the place making to look even more crowded, all the ride spiels are canned recordings, and most of the employees don't know what they are doing.

Don't get me wrong, I still love the park. I always will. It was just so much better then. The park had the feel of what Cedar Point still has today. A commitment to their customers that is unparallelled in all of the larger parks and that only the smaller traditional parks typically enjoy.

It was this sense of nostalgia that prompted me to put up this quiz. I am so happy to see so much more information that I either didn't know or had long forgotten.

Thanks to everyone for your input and stories. It has been wonderful.

Cheers,

kcies13-SFGAm & stoogemanmoe, I have been trying to find the Demon song myself. Since I am doing a working model of it, I am re-creating all the theming, including the "cage" at the entrance and the red water. I asked at Guest Relations when I was there in August about the song. They were impressed with my idea, but after some calls to maintenance, they said that they only had bits and pieces of it. And that's precisely what I heard them play in the station that day.....was the first time I heard it in years!

If ANYONE can help us get the song, even in pieces, please post! This coaster used to be the most popular ride in the park, but thanks to complaints about the "satanic" theme it has all but lost it's personality. It's up to us to remember it as it should be!

What they do have of it is terrible. I rode it several times during the season and the soundtrack just sounded like white noise it was so bad. I remember hearing that song the first time I rode the demon and it scared the living daylights out of me before I got on. Of course I was like 12 then so that had something to do with it.

I know what you mean Kick The Sky. When you go through the first tunnel out of the station the music blasts so loud you cant even understand it. They need to just have it playing over the outside speakers while people wait in line. I used to love that.

Alot of you guys brought back some great things from the parks rich history (all 26 years of it, lol). I will say that SF has kept alot of the charm of the Marriott era. However they have removed alot also. Its business as usual I guess.

Does anyone remember the Ferris Wheel they used to have? (Not the Sky Whirl). It was located close to the train station near Iron Wolf.

Also, remember when the Speedway cars used to have a longer track before they installed Splashwater Falls?

Ys I remember that ferris wheel. It was right by all those games over in County Fair. They removed so many cool flat rides from that park. The bottoms up, yukon yahoo, industrial revolution, haybailer, skywhirl. I miss all of them.
