SIX FLAGS ASTROWORLD
MARCH 12, 2002

Well what can I say about this park? Some of the themeing was very good while other times it was, “what were they thinking”. Missy summed it up correctly when she labeled the park “Six Flags Ghettoworld,” which we used to refer to the park the rest of the week. The place just looked really run down, rides and buildings needed painting and then lots of areas made you think you were at a county fair and that a “carny” would jump out and get you at anytime. Anyhow, here is a review (using the traditional scale of 1- to 5+) of all the rides that we rode at “Ghettoworld.”

Also notice that it was “double rides” at the park so ever coaster made you ride twice in the same seat.

SERIAL THRILLER
3-
2 rides – 2 front

Serial Thriller, how do I begin? How about, OUCH! I have NEVER been on such a painful inverted coaster. I now know why the enthusiast community refers to SLCs as “hang and bangs.” The seats are so uncomfortable and then the layout is just awful. I was, at times, nervous about whether or not the train could finish the layout. The half boomerang loop into the helix caused the train to almost come to a stop at the top of the inversion every time. It was just a terrible ride and if I was SFAW, I would feel so cheated that they didn’t get a proper B&M inverted. What a waste of space and money. What were they thinking when they bought this ride?

VIPER
4-
2 rides – 2 second row

The surprise ride of the park! I found this ride to be most enjoyable and the entire layout was very smooth. I did find out why they make the shortest person get in first, because the right hand side of the train comes very close to hitting supports and track in some spots. The only thing I can say negative about this ride is that it’s too short. One and one more thing, what’s with the tube on the first drop?

MAYAN MINDBENDER
3+
2 rides – 2 second row

A lot like Runaway Mountain at SFoT, only with a different theme. It appeared to be another Windstorm type coaster. It was an all right ride, but after you have ridden such rides as Rock-n-rollercoaster and Space Mountain, your expectations for indoor coasters are high. It was fun though… but not worth the wait.

==============================================
XLR-8
2+
2 rides –2 second row

Maybe they should rename the ride “Decelerate” because that’s what it seemed to do more often than “XLR-8ing”. Maybe I was spoiled by Ninja at SFMM, but this ride seemed even more boring than “Draggin’ Iron”. Also what was with all the weeds and over grown grass? Was that supposed to be themeing? Sad, this ride could have been so much better.

TEXAS TWISTER
Closed for some odd reason

==============================================
SERPENT
2
1 ride

Just had to ride this one, mainly because I was dared too. To me it reminded me a little of a earlier generation rollerskater, but it wasn’t anything too special.

==============================================
GREEZED LIGHTNING
3-
2 rides – 2 front

Probably the poorest maintained Schwarzkopf shuttle loop coaster in existence. It was so rough and the launch seemed “wimpy” to me. I was really looking forward to this one as well, very disappointing.

==============================================
BATMAN: The ESCAPE
4-
2 rides – 2 front

Not sure where the themeing was going on this one, but still I liked seeing another character get it’s ride (penguin). I liked the mountain entrance that they no longer use. To me it sets the tone for the ride. The ride itself was a lot of fun. I was expecting much, but it turned out to be one of my favorites at the park. The tunnel thing at the end is a cute touch. Missy really enjoyed this one, it was her first standup, however, the ‘Scorcher’ remains my favorite standup.

==============================================
ULTRA TWISTER
5+
2 rides – 2 front

O.K., so the rating might shock you, after all, this is a TOGO coaster. This ride was SO MUCH FUN! Granted I have never ridden it before, it probably would get dull quick, but as a first impression of this thing, it was so much. The first drop, which I swear has to be 90* was so scary, and then the rolls were so smooth and gradual. There really was nothing NOT to like about this ride. It was definitely one of the best rides, IMHO, at this park.

==============================================
TEXAS CYCLONE
3-
1 ride – near front

OUCH! The lap bars bruised my thigh so bad that it hurt to walk. The layout and ride itself was a lot of fun near the beginning of the ride, but as the ride went out it really punished me. Sometimes I hate being tall, but the ride hurt Missy as well and she’s kind of short, so it wasn’t just me.

==============================================
DUNGEON DROP
4-
1 ride

What can I say, you go up really high and it drops you. You get a nice view from up there, but I still like S&S towers better as well as Itamin 1st Generation free falls.

PARK OVERALL GRADE: C+
POINTS TO IMPROVE ON:
Where do you begin? The park pretty much needs an entire overhaul. Get rid of all the “carny coasters” and get some original rides. Honestly, the park appeared like a used car lot, only it was with coasters instead of cars. I didn’t go in expecting much, but I will say this is by far the weakest Six Flags park I have ever been to (granted I have not been to SFEG). Actually the easiest thing would be to gut the park and start over. Also trees are a wonderful thing, don’t be a concrete jungle. I bet that place is terrible in the hot Texas summers. I don’t even want to start on Waterworld, which by the way is now part of the park and no longer a separate admission. The park just felt dirty and really left a bad taste in my mouth. Seriously this park needs help in a big way, and it almost felt like the red-headed step child Six Flags park of Texas.

GO HUSKERS!

Texas Tornado is still closed? That's too bad, it looks like a great ride.

You are bold, but are you also...daring?
Has it been open since the accident?
