SeaWorld Orlando teasing its 2023 roller coaster with video and surf theme

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

From the park's media statement:

SeaWorld Orlando announced today that a new coaster, the park’s seventh, is launching in 2023 and teased the ride’s theme with the hashtag #HighSurfAdvisory. Guests are invited to get ready to feel the power of the pacific right here in Florida, letting the waves propel them into a one-of-a-kind ocean adventure. SeaWorld will announce ride details over the coming months in anticipation of the ride’s opening next year.

A launched stand-up? Hmmm. Also I enjoy their new title of the 'Coaster Capital of Orlando'...lol

With a launched stand up coming to the park, that 500' Aquatrax can't be far behind.

Curious choice, but ok.

Hi

It appears the leaked blueprints were accurate based upon this video. Two across seating is a rather interesting move.

I'll reserve judgement on the stand-up aspect as I'm sure that B&M has vastly improved upon the design over the last 25 years.

It all comes down to adjustment. Mantis was a pain to operate efficiently because you couldn't get people to stand right. And SeaWorld isn't exactly known for stellar operations. And having just been on Rougaru recently, it's hard to believe that was ever a standup given the intensity. Me assumption is that this ride is toned down.

Still, it is an odd choice.

I need to do a Vater-back to where I said there’d never be another new standup coaster. Pretty sure I said it multiple times. Time to eat my words I guess.

Would you like those words baked into a fresh, toasty bran muffin?

If anyone has had a proven track record of continuous design refinement, it would be B&M. Conversely, if anyone has a proven track record of regressive operations...

The design appears to allow dampened vertical movement of the restraint system during the ride, which I think will help with rider comfort.

Its probably an improvement over previous models, but the trend has been to convert or totally remove stand ups. I just don't see this model generating mass excitement with park patrons, since it is a regurgitation of B&Ms original concept and not something new. It's definitely not the next greatest thing.

I personally never enjoyed stand ups. I always wished that Mantis was a sit down because i liked the layout.

I also think the effort not to repeat coaster types between Sea World and BGT is going to limit both parks eventually but i would have chosen a B&M wing coaster over this.

Aye. That be me guess as well. If we be wrong we will both hang the jib.

Or cope.

Anything new to the market will do the job. I'd guess upwards of 90% of the target market of this ride have never been on, or seen a stand-up coaster. Not to mention 1990's B&M is a "regurgitation" of the Togo Standup from the 80's. Most don't know and don't care.

And here we go, Vater-back inception (a Vater-back to a Vater-back).

For those too lazy to click two links, here's my original post--which will be 20 years old when this new coaster opens--in full:

My theory for at least the last year is that the Scorcher was the last stand-up. It's possible another may be built in the future, but I can't imagine why. As everyone else has essentially stated, the idea of standing up is a novelty that has or will have worn off before long. Of the stand-ups that I've ridden, this is how I'd rate them (more or less):

1. King Cobra (PKI)
2. Georgia Scorcher (SFoG)
3. Shockwave (PKD)
4. Mantis (CP)
5. Chang (SFKK)
6. Vortex (PC)

I love Togo trains so much more than B&M's, and I actually prefer air on stand-ups to the intense positive Gs that the larger B&Ms are known for, which tend to hurt my legs a bit. I hope Shockwave sticks around longer than KC did.

Can't really eat my words (baked in bran or not), as in my defense it was a theory and I did say a future standup might be possible (though I'm still trying to imagine why). I still think the standup is a novelty that won't see a resurgence beyond this new one...unless this has some kooky new element or feature (exclusive to the standup experience) that just blows everyone away somehow.

I'm still not certain it's a standup because you can't really see that well below the waist in that teaser video and the patents suggest a seat that's very high on the support column (to fit the new mechanism underneath) but still has you in a seated position. However I'm kind of excited if this is a new version of the standup because I'm apparently one of a handful of people that has enjoyed the 3 I've ridden (Mantis, Riddler, Scorcher) and have never had a problem with the restraints causing discomfort. Those little pops of air going over the quick direction changes on Mantis were always some of my favorite feelings.

As to how intense this could be, I would honestly expect something along the lines of (at least as I've always heard it, it's very mild, haven't ridden anything outside the US) Air or whatever it's called now. They layout doesn't look very exciting and every element looks smooth and drawn out.

maXairMike, you can clearly see around the 17-18 second mark that it's a stand-up, as the train goes over the launch and first hill.

I'm also in the camp that I never disliked standups. Sure, they're not the most comfortable or amazing coasters but I enjoy the unique experience. Like Vater, my favorite standup was always King Cobra at KI. It was an airtime machine, quite an experience unlike anything else.

Also, rcdb.com lists it as a standup (not that that's definitive proof, but a pretty good assumption it's true). Also also, it's themed to surfing.

I never disliked standups, but they aren't at the top of my list of favorite rides. They're like flyers in the sense that they're a neat first time experience, but once per visit is enough. Actually, considering how uncomfortable the prone position is, even when compared to standing, once per decade is enough for flyers. I prefer to just sit down as it's by far the most comfortable position on any coaster.

One other downside to standups is that, much like inverted coasters, if you're a visual person like I am, front row is the only way to go. The view sucks in any other seat.

Edit: could've had a great addition to the typo meme.

Ok, pausing and going through the individual frames it does look very much like a standup. The last time I paid much attention to this it was still up in the air as to seated/standing, but the patent(s) suggested seated from what I recall, so I was still going off of those. Hopefully this is a solid improvement in ride experience for the 90% of riders that seemed to not have a great time with standups and their restraints.

Once the orcas are gone, they gotta fall back on something. :) I'm ok with more roller coasters.

MF Crew 2006
Magnum's 3rd hill is the best airtime hill out of all the coasters in the world!

I just hope they design the heartline in a way that considers how it will affect the eventual floorless conversion.
