Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Beginning Aug. 30, the SeaWorld and BuschGardens Florida theme parks will adapt to cashless operations. The other company owned parks have already made that transition.

Dispensaries in PA accept debit cards as well. PA is still "medical" so maybe that's a distinction?

I find it amusing that people are shocked when I tell them I haven't had a checkbook since about 2009.

I'm 35 years old and I can count on one hand how many checks I've written in my life. I've never owned a checkbook, save for a handful of "free" checks the bank gave me once upon a time. I find it crazy that people think I'm crazy.

Be careful transferring money to individuals if its tied to a credit card.

One of the cool things about AmEx is that they do fee-free transfers to Venmo/Paypal. No idea how long that will last (I assume Venmo/Paypal are subsidizing it) but while it does..

The thing I noticed about Europe is that all pos terminals were the same. Here in the US it’s anyone’s guess. Swipe, tap, insert, sign, don’t sign, debit?, credit? It’s all different.

I find this to be irritating. Why isn't there a standard terminal design here?

The only checks I've written in the past 3 years were payments my wife makes to her school district to rent space for a summer camp she hosts. They won't take cash and I've been too lazy to get a money order. I said I would do that next year because it took them about 6 weeks to deposit this check this time.

Our checks were mostly for various high school activities, paying for our meals at an end of the year choir banquet as an example. But now that our youngest has entered the college world the few checks that we did write should drop to even fewer.

I would gladly go back to the "more numerous but for smaller amounts" checks from high school in exchange for the "fewer but much larger amounts" electronic transfers from grad school. :) And as to tuition, those payments are only electronic to me. School gets a paper check just that I don't have to write it. Would be happy to write one if someone else would cover it.

Agreed - a $20 check would be a pleasure to write as compared to paying an electronic fortune to Syracuse University!

Those of us in higher ed appreciate your patronage.

Is Lakeside in Colorado still cash only?

Also, strippers.

The strippers will adapt to change. Probably faster than most.

Lots of places to slide a credit card.

I write a decent amount of checks. We end up paying most of our contractors with checks for some reason. Also, the church (though we have recently switched to automatic payments). Also all kinds of random charities and high school activities and "booster clubs."

Oddly enough, this past Sunday was the first Sunday since the pandemic that we physically passed the plate around. Having lots of different means of giving (autopay, link, QR code, plate) means people can give the way that works best for them.

I haven't had a checkbook since about 2009.

I run a business here in the UK, and I have one customer who absolutely insists on paying by cheque each month.

I'm sure he does it intentionally, thinking that I have to go to the bank to pay it into our account. Fortunately, cheques under £1000 can be uploaded straight into our banking app with a picture these days, so it's hardly inconvenient for us

I had to look... it appears my max check-by-photo limit is $7,500. Neat!

Or he may just prefer to pay by check. I get that there are people who have never written a check in their lives, have never had a check book ever, haven't written a check in 2 decades, etc. That's great. But other people still prefer to pay with checks. Not to make your life more difficult. Just how they prefer to pay.

May also be the case that he doesn't either know what other payment options exist or how to use them. That was case with my friends who until recently had never done any online banking. Now they love it. Paying with checks wasn't to make life more challenging for others. Just what they knew. Not everyone can be as advanced and with it as others.

I probably would have opted to have a book of checks when I got my bank account but they were not free, something like $25. In the time since I have gotten that account, I have maybe had to use a money order for those places that don't take cash/credit (like the home inspector I hired last month) little enough that the fee charged from the money orders still doesn't equal what I would have paid for the checks. Cash will eventually go the way of the checkbook, not entirely gone but rare when you see it/need it.

I just checked and my Ally account now allows me to deposit checks up to 50k by just taking a picture of the check.

Makes sense given Ally is an online bank.
