Santa Cruz Boardwalk wants to proceed with drop tower plans

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

The Boardwalk wants to install a 125-foot-high "drop tower" thrill ride at the oceanside amusement park — seven years after scrapping a plan for a taller tower because of community outcry. The tower is a scaled-down version of a 1996 plan for a wider, 186-foot-high tower that met with opposition from residents who said it would hamper beach views and harm migrating fowl that could crash into it.

Someone should refer the park here to the North Coast, where we have giant flocks of migratory birds crossing through twice a year. Miraculously, none are stupid enough to fly into the multitude of giant rides at Cedar Point.

People come up with some seriously ridiculous reasons to oppose that which they don't like.

I can't stop laughing! Where is Fabio when you need him?
OK, these people live next to a pier that is jammed with people all the time, already has a roller coaster and several rides, and contains some of the freakiest street performers I've ever seen, and they don't want a little drop ride?

A day is a drop of water in the ocean of eternity. A week is seven drops.

FINALLY! Oh my god, my homepark is actually gonna get a somewhat "big" ride! The scariest thing they have is Fireball. That sucks it's only gonna be 125 feet, but it's better than the frog hopper they have. Hopefully it will be built by the end of this year because I have a pass and it only takes 10 minutes to walk there. Oh yeh and here in Santa Cruz they are all stupid about height, I think buildings can only be 3 stories tall except for they ones downtown which aren't even that big (maybe 6 or 7). Great News!
So are birds constantly crashing into sky-scrapers in our big cities? That is scraping the very bottom of the barrel for an opposition idea.

Well, this IS Santa Cruz we're talking about here...they smoke a lot of weed up there. ;-)

Yet another example of a vocal minority ruining it for the masses. They should get one of those giant top spin things (if they don't already, I haven't been there in years).

BaSSiStiSt, you sig is so true.

125 ft drop tower... some of these smaller towers really do pack a punch, expecially if their 'semi launched down'. I do have to agree however, that some residents do fnid the most obsurd things, however, this could threaten about atleast $1000 of their property value

I think its really cool that the boardwalk wants to try this again considering that I live in Santa Cruz. But keep in mind that 125 feet is exactly as tall as the top of the flag on the casino fun center(ok, 2 feet shorter). For around there this ride is really tall (I can almost see the flag from my house, and its really high). But I think that the boardwalk will get the permit to put this in because Santa Cruz city is getting some money off the ride.

And there isn't a good chance the ride will be open before the end of the year. They'll probably wait until the 2004 season

Bassistist........maybe you inadvertantly hit a good point with your comment.........maybe it's the people smoking all the weed up there that are afraid THEY might flat out walk right into the tower and not the birds flying into it after all...........LOLOL
Hey, we're not all stoners! (see my prevoius post)*** This post was edited by ace4242424 5/29/2003 11:19:12 PM ***
The best freefall I've been on besides TZTOT @ Disney/MGM is the Fabbri Mega Drop which is only 120 feet! That is what Santa Cruz needs.
Hey I live in Santa Cruz too...I think most of us are stoners..lol. (my mom, my g/f, my friends...haha.)
What are they all so worried about the ride drowning out the Gun Shots

It isn't so bad. . .
Once you're used to it

We should be democratic about the whole thing. I doesn't matter what San Jose folk want or other visitors. they are guests and must act like guests. If Santa Cruz residents want the ride, do it. If not, the Seaside Company can't impose it's will. We are citizens under our government, not big businesses.Osker
