Sandusky wants to charge Cedar Point goers parking tax

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Sandusky officials voted to approve the study of a parking tax that would exclusively target guests of Cedar Point. The city already imposes an admission tax. The park opposes the plan.

What shocks me as that over half of the people in their survey said that they would stop going to Cedar Point if there was such a tax! That is amazing! You would stop going because of a few extra bucks?
Sandusky brings in a bundle of tourism off of Put-in-Bay.

I have to agree with the people on the fact that the city wants to tap into the precious resources of the park. I think it is an insane idea but they have to get their money somehow and I guess with the way things are going, they have to get Route 250 done somehow and extra money may be the only way.

There are hideous backups on that road almost daily when people come in. I have experienced that myself many times and I think they should of had that done many years ago. They knew that Cedar Point brings in huge plumes of traffic and they need the infrastructure to handle such capacity.

I just don't understand why they have to put a tax into the swing of things. I don't know, sometimes its just greed...maybe its just bad luck.

Hope it doesn't pass through....

Sure, some people are saying they won't go because of a parking charge, but in reality, that's just not true. As my boss found out at the nightclub I worked at, you either want to see the band, or you don't. An extra dollar or two is not the dealbreaker that makes people turn around and go home. Most of the people who said they wouldn't go to CP with the hike probably didn't intend on going in the first place.

Try the themepark diet now! Just walk vigorously around large parks for a week. "It really works!", says I-Fan who lost 1 inch off his waist in a week while in Texas.

The tax money wouldn't go toward Route 250...most of that is in Perkins Township if I'm not mistaken.

Gas tax, bed tax, sales tax, parking tax, parking fee, causeway toll (even if you drive the Chausee they charge you this anyway...), $42 admission, admission tax, $3 for a 20oz soda pop...

What's next, a re-entry tax (have your hand stamped to reenter for $1)? An exit tax (thanks for coming to Cedar Point - $2 please)????

Good Grief, Charlie Brown!

At first when I read this, I was very angry, but then I realized something. A few years ago, my hometown (which is near CP and also experiences an influx of tourists every summer) wanted to pass a ferry tax that all passengers who take the ferry to nearby Kelley's Island would have to pay. I was all for this, even though it did not pass. My reasoning was that if they were coming here and driving on our roads to get to Kelleys Island, then they should have to pay to help keep them up. This is the exact same logic the city of Sandusky will use to justify this tax, should it pass.

This all just goes to show how much your personal interests cause you to react inconsistently to things...

I get the feeling there's a conspiracy over at King's Island to remove anything that has "K" or "C" in its initials.

The last post by MooreOn has a lot of sense to it. Their motive may as well be money to improve the roads or the infrastructure within the city limits. Maybe I wasn't so clear but yet I understand his concern.

And about the exit fee, thats like you paying $50 to get out of jail in the game of Monopoly (R)...lol

Hate to say it folks but the $10 Parking days are already here. Last year I watched Six Flags Great America's parking go from $6 in spring to $8 by late summer and $10 in fall, and this season it's starting out at $10.
$10 is nothing for parking fees nowadays. Busch Gardens Williamsburg charges that much for their parking. Grant it, you are paying for a little more than a parking lot -- someone has to pay for the trams and the drivers! I'm just wondering will $10 be the cap industry wide??

$10 really is in line with what other parks are charging. However, if CP does anything like they've done in past years, it might not reach that level anyways. I've been going multiple times a year and have often seen the parking price drop mid-season, let's hope we see the same happen if this goes through. I think it generally comes after a lot of complaints, when they realize this does not start people's day positively. And many people once in a certain mood, will not change that mood all day.

As far the comments about the soda prices, I'm pretty sure that CP doesn't have full say on that. Having worked there the last two summers, I remember multiple times hearing from management how Pepsi asks them to set prices on the machines. They want the prices to be at the same level as the other parks. Again, I've seen prices change mid-season on soda as well. I think it really is an issue of what they need to do to keep the general public from getting upset while still making a nice profit.

Will this cause a tax on each car, or will it tax the actual fee?

I don't ever recall CP lowering the parking price mid-season - at least for the past 4 years or so. By the same token, I don't remember them raising it midseason either. Last year it was $7 at least June through the end of the season, and the year before it was $6 all year.

I don't think it's Pepsi telling CP to set the prices at $3. Even if there is truth to what you say, I haven't seen any other parks as high as $3. Last season, the soda prices DID change midseason. They went from $2.50 down to $2. Hopefully the same thing will happen this year. Even Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ is $2.75 and they are usually considered to be one of the most overpriced parks.

Perhaps the city feels that the tourists are in Sandusky solely for CP. I can understand the want to tax, afterall, every park goer does drive on Sandusky's streets. Would you believe I have been in Sandusky on numerous occasions and NOT attended CP? There is a lot of stuff to do while in Sandusky. Mall, Meijer, many mini-golfs, theatres, etc. It could be why the hotels near the park charge an arm and a leg for a room too. I'm just glad I live close enough that I don't have to stay overnight.

MooreOn, haven't you ever heard of a gas tax. Every time that you pump gas into your car, you pay a tax that is for building and maintaining roadways. If the parking tax were for fixing the roads that are damaged by CP visitors, how much should it be? How much damage does your car do to the roadways of Sandusky? Sandusky officials know that CP is not going anywhere and that people will still visit, tax or no tax, so they are going to be greedy and milk the CP cash cow for all it is worth.
