San Diego losing Broadway Flying Horses Carousel

Posted over on Screamscape,

San Diego seems to be poised to lose one of their great treasures... the 114 year old Broadway Flying Horses Carousel that has been running at the Seaport Village mall near downtown San Diego since 1980. The history of the ride can be traced back to it’s creation for Coney Island in 1890 by Charles Looff. The ride was put up for auction this past week and sold to an unknown bidder with unknown intentions for $650,000 beating out a few local groups trying to keep the carousel in San Diego. There has been speculation that the ride could be torn apart and the units put up for individual auctions piecemeal.

Sucks. This was a really nice, brisk merry-go-round if I remember from the last time I was on it.
