S & S air launch, How does it work?

I did a search for this and was unable to come up with anything. I am curious about the physics behind the S & S air launch. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
It's pretty simple actually.. The same method is used for all S&S rides. I'll use Hypersonic as an example. The train is attatched to a catch car by a dog underneath one of the rows. The catch car is attatched to a cable, and the cable is attached to a piston, which is located in a cylinder (underneath the ride? Don't really remember). Air is compressed and then released into the cylinder pushing the piston, which pulls the cable that is attatched to the catch car, that is pulls the train down the track.

I know it isn't the best description, but hopefully that helps.
