Rough Woodies

Okay, fellow coasterbuzzers, thank you for the info. Now I just want to know howcome Rattler is so rough. It is in it's 11th season, and is horrible. Texas Cyclone is about 27 or 26, and it is considerably smooth compared to that snakely coaster.

On the seventh day, God created coasters!

I think the roughest wooden rollercoaster i have been on is the raging wolf bobs at SFWOA.

It has to be THE roughest wooden rollercoaster in the world!!!

Ya know Wolf Bob's isn't rough just shuffley. The trains don't track at all. It is downright Violent.

Big Dipper bottoms out just terrible. After riding yesterday I think i was about 2 inches shorter then I started out. My frinds in the front row said it was very smooth. Me in the 3rd row, ouch.

The Beast and Night, They go together like Peanut Butter and Jelly

I just rode the Blue Streak at Conneaut Lake Park in the back seat and it about killed me. I'm still sore, 2 days later! I used to ride it as a kid, and I don't remember it being so bad. I've ridden lots of woodies and have never had this happen before. Watch out for that one!
Two rides on Ghostrider can be like night and day.

Ride one- 11am, silver train, car 3, row 2, 4 inches of space between me and lap bar (but as far as possible without pain). Smooth as butter except in the helix and the unbanked turnaround. No pain once off the ride. Ride was the best ever, and very smooth, although VERY wild and agressive.

Ride 2- 3pm, copper train, car 2, row 1, very stapled, no space between me and lapbar. Very painful, nearly bruises. Last helix was the devil as was the first drop. 20X as rough as ride 1. No pain 2 minutes after ride.

I would definately reccomend row 2 for some reason, i guess the way the lap bar hits your legs in row 1. Also ride the silver train for sure. Copper is so rough, and it just came out of rehab a few months ago. Gold is good too when it comes back up in October.

Psyclone was the ride that killed me. My rib cage was in pain for an entire week. Unable to get up from a chair w/o pain.

erica, the blue streak, rough? not really. It's not the smoothest, the park doesn't really take great care of it, but Son of Beast is like, 8,000 times more rough.

Try seat #5 on Big Dipper. Smooth as silk. Nice airtime, hardly any roughness at all.

Raging Wolf Bobs: Roughest wood coaster I've rode, including SOB. I think one of the books says "It'll knock out Mike Tyson on a good day."

Talk to the claw...

I grew up riding Cyclone-still do and thought there could never be another coaster that rough
Congrats to Hercules, Thunderbolt, Raging Wolf Bobs, Mean Streak and SOB for proving me dead wrong

I wouldnt ride SOB again without knee pads and a cup, and my g/f wont touch ANY of the forementioned without her industrial strentgh sports bra

O&A Rock! WOW!

There are likely several reasons the Rattler is so rough. First, it was poorly designed to start with. The first drop and pull-up had to be reprofiled due to numerous injuries. Second, it hasn't received the best of care, which is a bad thing in the hot Texas sun. Third, after the fan turn it is just about the worst coaster ever designed, why I don't know. Its a good thing that most coasters aren't like the Rattler or there probably wouldn't be to many enthusiasists. I rode it once, and that will likely stay my lifetime count. The worst coaster I have ever rode.

Seems like you haven't gotten around as much ;)

Psyclone is glass smooth compared to Raging Wolf Bobs or Son of Beast. Now if you actually feel like your ribs are being ripped apart on Psyclone, then I advise you to stay away from a handful of others that are MUCH WORSE than Psyclone.

Sonny gets a bad rap. If you ride in the second row of any car it is CCI Esque.

Venture to the 1st or 3rd seats and you will need a chiropractor.

Rattler was simply uncomfortably rough... in fact, it was too rough to enjoy a mucho-potential coaster! I'd think the roughness would be due to poor design of the coaster or no good TLC... but I heard some improvements were made in the off season.

Do you believe?

It's interesting to see what other people consider rough. I've been on many wooden coasters (haven't updated TR in a while) and I would have to say that Psyclone at SFMM overall was the worst. The trains were uncomfortable, the ride was uncomfortable, it was just bad. I have ridden the real Cyclone, and the Psyclone is a slap in the face of the original.

SOB was rough for me because of the restraints. If my legs didn't get shoved in the restraint (and I wasn't stapled) it would be a great ride. MS is just boring, not really rough. RWB is another rough one. However, the Bobs style coaster is rough by design. When I rode in in 1992 it wasn't any smoother than this year. The Beast, Big Dipper, Blue Streak, etc. are pretty standard woodies and will give a different ride every time. Want a guarenteed headache, ride the Beast in the last 3rd of the train at about 4pm in mid August. OUCH. Six hours later, 10pm, roller coaster Nirvana.

Speaking of Nirvana, Raven and Ghostrider . . .

kRaX, RWB last year was pretty rough, as was Sonny up until this year......now, SoB is really quite smooth in comparison.....but I gotta say Psyclone is the real POS of the group...a bunch of rides during the Con *convinced* me this MAY be the only wooden coaster I've ever ridden that I thought might actually be "beyond repair".....

If you're not watching "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart", you're just watching the news....

If you want rough, try riding Aska!!! Oh boy, never ask Togo to make custom trains for a woodie. Just the fact that those trains were made by Togo should explain something to you. I believe that now they have trainsby Intamin, but don't quote me on that. I just remember that in 99', Aska was the killer.
I've not had a rough ride on Son of Beast since 2000. I must be missing out on a Scooby's Ghoster Coaster ride or something if everyone else is skipping this to go somewhere else. SOB is easily my favorite coaster at the park and in 6-2, it could kick *any* CCI's booty! CCIs aren't perfect either as I though Cheetah and Villain were much rougher than this. MS isn't terribly rough until the end for me, but at least its consistantly boring to make sure I don't have too much fun. Hurtmeplease is the biggest loser with me for being both rough and boring and the horrible layout should be the answer why. Thunderhawk was great and fairly smooth, so I don't think it's the park's fault (well, there is the trim braked first drop).

Speaking of Ghostrider, the roughest thing about the ride was its operations. The crew was slow and unenthusiastic and they had one train op. The coaster was great though and not very bumpy or rough at all! I thought it was perfect like a wooden coaster should be. Terrible operations at the park though plus Windjammer translated to one of the 5 worse days I've ever had at a park (and I have nothing else to go on since that's been my only visit). I sure hope it will be better next time and I'll keep an open mind. It just seemed the park was way too crowded for what they were offering and that was no fun in the least. Anyways, Ghostrider alone, I highly recommend the ride.

Now, I've been one of the biggest Sonny fans since 2000, but even *I* wouldnt go as far as to say Sonny can kick *any* CCI's booty. I personally KNOW Sonny cant lick The Legend's boots let alone be considered superior. And I wouldnt be suprised if Boulder Dash and Tremors put up a good fight.

Then I *really* dont understand how any coaster that can give FOUR bona fide moments of stand-up air can be considered boring. Maybe I'm just to light-in-the-ass compared to the average "super-sized" enthusiast, but Herc tried to throw me *out* of the train more than jostle me *inside* the train. I'd really like to ride it again soon!

But if we want to talk teeth rattlin' back hurtin', only fit to be used for a Texas A&M bonfire woodies there are four that fit the bill for me:
Rolling Thunder: Right
Hurler @ PKD
Screamin' Eagle
And a woodie to be named in an upcoming TR (if you've been playing along at home, you can easily guess which one it is!)

But (with the exception of the unnamed coaster), I'd ride them all again anyway (I've even Marathoned Hurler). Cause to me, even being that bad makes me laugh. I've been fortunate to walk off all of them in one piece.

Jeremy, I have The Legend up in the air right now since I've heard so many mixed reviews this year about the PTCs hurting the ride's intense performance, so I'm holding SOB at #1 right now (I haven't had a night ride on Legend either, so SOB at night in 6-2 is coaster heaven).

About Herc, I tried three times for him to cooperate with me, because I did feel like something fun was under that shakiness. The first time he nearly gave me permanent vibration in my back. The second time, I leaned forward the entire ride and slammed myself into the lap bar a few times. The third time, I was just too sick from the first two times lol! The way you act though and I know you've been on lately (I've not been on since 2000), I'll be sure to give another try.

My friend Diana (coasterwench) acts like Rolling Thunder is a walk in the park compared to Hercules, but I should be used to your oddball tastes Hostyl. ;)
