From the official blog:

Today, we’re happy to announce one of the park’s newest nighttime experiences, “Rivers of Light,” will make its official debut on February 17.

Continuing the grand Disney tradition of innovative, after-dark entertainment, “Rivers of Light” combines live performance, floating set pieces, a soaring musical score, fountains and more in a celebration of animals and nature. The story magically unfolds on the broad natural stage of the Discovery River, conveying the uplifting spirit of an ancient and timeless lantern ceremony and filled with symbolism, storytelling and plenty of heart.

Very cool show that fits the park very well. I only wish the fire tower finale had a little more firepower to it (World of Color has a bigger jet.)

AK is stunning at night, and the awakening show on the Tree of Life is really cool. I look forward to spending more time there at night.

I haven't been following this one at all but it looks cool.

Any rumors about what accounted for the delay? This was supposed to debut back in the Spring of last year, right?

The initial delay was due to some technology issues. The floats are trackless and controlled by gps positioning, so that they can pull off maneuvers that would be impossible with human drivers. It took much of last year to iron out the kinks in the system so that the floats wouldn't crash into each other.

Last fall, they did some cast previews and then the show mysteriously disappeared again until now. I don't think they ever officially explained the second delay, but initial word from those previews was only mildly enthusiastic with some consistent criticisms. It looks like they took a few more months to incorporate some of the feedback, though they may be pushing the show out the door now that Avatarland is imminent.

I'm still quite excited to see it. I never expected it to be as intense as Illuminations, since they can't disturb the animals that live close to the show area.

Interesting, if true about the GPS stuff. Funny thing about moving stuff around in water is that it tends to keep going in the direction it's going unless you prevent that in advance.
