Rise in Disney theme park expenses causing fan frustration

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Complaints about the price of a Disney vacation may sound like a tale as old as time. But as masses return to the world’s most popular theme parks following pandemic closures, they are finding fees attached to perks that used to be free. And some of the most frustrated fans are voicing new levels of disenchantment.

Read more from The Washington Post.

There are two of them like that and I can't stand either one. The other day (fortunately it was at least before the Icon Park accident) a headline read "Tragedy at Hollywood Studios today."

Said tragedy? Rise went down and dumped the queue.

I saw that in my feed. We're talking about the same site. That's total trash exploiting the algorithm for views. It sucks that it works.

What sucks is that every community of folks I know (Disney freaks, coaster enthusiasts, casual local Annual Passholders) absolutely loathes that site. Yet they clearly are successful and make money doing what they do.

Don't underestimate the benefit of a sheer volume of content. This site has about 30,000 pages indexed in Google, and all things staying the same, it could probably make my car payment the rest of my life.

If you'll forgive a wild jump off topic for a moment, success on the Internet these days seems to require doing crappy things whether you want to or not.

I make a Solitaire collection for macOS and iPhone. It's polished, free of ads and tracking, and costs $0.99 as a one-time purchase.

Anyone who searches for it by name on the App Store sees it listed below a competitor which is free, but tracks all manner of personal data and is filled with ads that interrupt you between each game. These can be removed if you pay $4.99.

The last time I looked at bidding for the keyword of the name of my own product, it was $4.50 per download, which after commission means that I'd have been down $3.75 per sale with no prospect of ever making that back. Not that people would buy it mind, especially when there's a "free" alternative available.

Bah humbug.

Yeah, among the few YouTube folks I'm interested in, Veritasium, Smarter Every Day, and others, have complained about doing what they want to do versus what the algorithm encourages them to do.
