Ride op hurt in floorless coaster accident at SFO

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

According to a report from Cleveland's NewsChannel5 (WEWS), a ride operator on Batman Knight Flight at Six Flags Ohio was life-flighted and later released after falling ten feet from the ride platform, apparently to the maintenance area below. Batman is a floorless coaster, where the floor between the train cars retracts before allowing the coaster to dispatch.

No additional information was released. Check the report on NewsNet5.

An eye witness account says that the forward dispatch operator pushed the button, the gates moved but the floor didn't. She left her post, where she enabled the dispatch, to find out what was going on and attempted to cross the floor when it opened. She slid between the moving floor panel and the platform. Operator error.

She got lucky. If she stepped in front of Superman, she'd be dead.

I was there yesterday and rode Batman in the morning. If it is the girl I'm thinking of, this story does not suprise me. She wasn't paying full attention to the ride all morning. Not to mention they were stacking up a two train operation all day.

In fact, all or most ride ops yesterday need to be shaken up- they're all pretty apathetic about taken our lives into their hands. *** This post was edited by roadkill on 5/31/2000. ***
I was there on the rainy days of may 28th/29th, and this doesnt surprise me a bit either. Although it was nice to have rides running in the rain, the ride ops seemed to be very unprepared. There wasnt anybody in our line, but they wouldnt let us ride again, and ended up releasing a half-empty train. Kind of makes it intimidating coming into the station, hoping they're still awake.
It’s a good thing the brakes are computer controlled. I trust B&Ms electronics more than the ride hosts I saw there the 28th. The rain ride was neat, though.

some ride operaters need to be watched more carfully,i was at michigans adventure on monday,we went on the flying trapeze(swing ride)and the ride op started the ride wile people were still getting fastned in,she never even checked to see if every one was on,in return a chair from the ride hit a kid in the head prety hard and knocked him down.luckaly he was ok..
LoL, this would happen most likely at Six Flags....

The ride does not have B&M controls. Another company made them. Just wanted to clear that up.
Andy I forgot, the same clumbsy person operates every ride at every Six Flags Park.

Correct. The control system was done by a company called Consign. They have been designing control systems for B&M for years now and have not had a single accident yet. Their record outside of B&M is perfect also.

Thanks AcerCG for helping me clear that up.
Coasterdude4, I was referring to the fact that from what I've experienced is that at every SF park I've gone to, I've been dissapointed with the quality of workers who work in park operations.

I heard about it on the radio. When I was there opening night and a week after I noticed the same unprepared ride ops. Stacking also. Come on people it is not that hard. (Must of been a blond op). And I think they are way overdue for a new dispatch slogan. "Front clear, back clear, all clear." That's real creative.

I think you are wrong. The crews @SFO have been great this year. Villain's is by far the best right now. While I admit the BKF crew isn't the best, I have seen worse. Lemme think, uhhhhh Mantis.

Long Live SIX FLAGS

Oh have you been and seen the Mantis crew this year much improved. Stacking is much less than last year. I was just ripping on the BKF crew, with time they will get better. Villains crew was good.

I haven't seen Mantis since AAA day, and they were stacking like mad on that day.
Mongoose give them a break it was their first "real" day. Mantis ops are almost there. ;)
I went to Cedar Point last weekend, and the Mantis ops were very good in my opinion. There was almost no stacking and the line was moving very quickly. Also, to my surprise, all three trains were running on MF, and the wait was only 1 hour!! And this was on memorial day. The loading station and crew were quite impressive. Needless to say, the ride its self was beyond description, any and all coaster lovers, no matter where, MUST get to the point this summer.
