Residents in the middle of UK Universal development face uncertain future

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Residents living in the middle of land purchased for a Universal Studios theme park say they have not been informed about what will happen to their homes. Many residents say they have not yet received confirmed offers of compensation even though their homes are ear-marked for demolition in Universal's plans to transform the former brickworks site.

Oh, you guys in the good part of the world aren't used to dealing with american companies. You will end up paying them for the privilege of taking away your home, and then they will rent another property to you that way you can continue paying them for the rest of your lives. Good luck.

Land of the enslaved and home of the oligarch!

Wouldn’t be modern CoasterBuzz without someone swooping in to declare how awful the United States is, how every American company is the villain, and how the rest of the world is a flawless utopia. Luckily, there are over a hundred international airports in this country, feel free to pick one and explore that paradise.

Meanwhile, Universal is about to build another world-class park, this time in the UK, creating thousands of jobs and breathing life into an otherwise sleepy local economy. Yes, they’ll make a profit. That’s what companies do when they put up billions of dollars and shoulder the risk of never seeing a return.

As for the handful of people currently in limbo... I’m quite certain Universal won’t be bulldozing homes in the dead of night. The paperwork will come, the compensation will happen, it’s not their first rodeo. Let’s just try to survive the groundbreaking without another TED Talk on how terrible America is.

Clearly there was some sarcasm in the statement they wouldn’t be paid.

I have explored that paradise, but legal immigration is rather difficult in most countries, there is a reason so many people coming to the US jump the border fence, float over on a makeshift boat at night, dig tunnels, etc.

Debatable how much risk they shoulder, they likely transfer most of that risk to a third party, which might even transfer that risk to another third party. Universal is of the size and financial backing that they probably have little accepted risk once they go through a risk analysis and mitigation.

Anyway, yes the US still sucks. Sorry. We are a third world country with a **** ton of lipstick and perfume slapped on.

The existing property owners are not under any obligation to sell to Universal.

That gives them a significant upper hand in any price negotiation.

I wouldn't be too sure about that.....

So you have options.
