Remembering GregLeg

There isn't really an easy way to say this, but I learned a bit ago that Greg Legowski, from the Pittsburgh area, known as GregLeg in most online circles, died this morning. I don't have a lot of specifics and I'm not even sure what to share, but his wife reached out to a few folks from the online coaster nerd circles this morning.

Greg was an OG member here, and also active in a number of online communities, including on Usenet's rec.roller-coaster back in the day. That means he's been in the community for more than two decades. I first met Greg on my first trip to Kennywood, and we had beers at various events after that. I chatted with him just a few weeks ago talking about career stuff, as he too was a (much better) software engineer. He's actually responsible for some of the code that parses the text and markup in this very forum.

I imagine there will be further details regarding memorials or giving opportunities, and I'll be sure to pass them along. Feel free to post anything you find as well.

This news came as a total shock to me - I met Greg very early on, and he was responsible for a lot of the trips I was able to take, because he was always willing and able to travel.

Such a kind and friendly guy, who could carry on a conversation about almost any topic. We shared a lot of other interests such as home theater/audio, music, some form of video games, projectors/TVs etc..

We went to so many events together in the early 2000’s, and I would go visit him and we would go to Kennywood and get Uncle Sam’s subs.

I am just flabbergasted and really don’t know how to process this. Obviously, life is different for all of us now, and we only communicated occasionally on the internet and social media, but the doesn’t change the roots of the friendship. This stings.

Wow. Prayers to GregLeg’s family. I hadn’t seen him in a long time but met him a few times in passing in the early aughts at various events.

Very sorry to read this. I remember him as a pretty gentle and smart guy.

You know how I know I've been here too damn long?

We've done this too many times already.

Met Greg once or twice. We did the podcast with him a few times, I think. What can I say that others won't be able to with more authority? For better or worse, we're all a part of this CB community. He was one of us.

Sigh.

I didn't know him as well as many of you, but we did chat from time to time and he always seemed like a really nice guy.

Hi

So sad, another friend from our community that is gone way to soon. I heard a rumour about this and started to check when I found this thread.

He was a great guy, sending prayers and mojo out to his family...

Never really knew him personally, but he was definitely an OG CBuzzer and we've definitely exchanged thoughts throughout the years. Always struck me as a nice guy and I think he did some volunteer work with ACE, right? Sucks.

I have to say this has hit hard. When I found out yesterday, I was shocked, saddened, without words, cried and just wondered how this happened. We have lost a lot of great people through the years, but they had been having medical issues and we knew things weren't good for them. This blind-sided me, hard.

Greg and I did a lot of stuff together back in the day. His birthday was 2 days before mine and there was a running joke that we were actually the same person. He was my "big brother" and I was his "lil sis." We traveled together, did coaster show shoots together, just hung out talking about whatever, we even helped him paint when he moved into his house, the list goes on.

My daughter started playing travel softball and that took us away from the coaster world for a few years, Greg finally married his long-time friend and we drifted apart some. Last time I saw him, it wasn't weird or awkward, we just picked up where we left off. That was Greg, always smiling, always friendly, always ready for fun, always welcoming. I will miss him tremendously and pray for his family. RIP Big Bro

Absolutely shocked to hear this.

I met Greg back in 2002 on one of the first coaster trips I ever did – with the American Coaster Enthusiasts. I remember him talking excitedly about a new project he was working on; something to do with measuring bandwidth of Internet links as I recall, though it's a long time ago.

Condolences to his family.

I remember that company he worked for. I think he did a couple of startups between Microsoft early in his career and Google in recent years. Like I said, he was at a different level, and was a great help early in my time when I had no idea what I was doing.

Sad. I remember listening to the old podcasts with Greg on them. He seemed like a cool down to earth guy that I would have liked to have a chat with on a midway. RIP!

I always enjoyed Greg’s insights, and I too remember his great contributions as a guest on the Coasterbuzz podcasts. I still remember to this day some discussion on one podcast about his work at Microsoft, and he made a comment, “At least I didn’t build that stupid paper clip,” or something to that effect. Got a kick out of it then and it still elicits a chuckle from me. Maybe a small memory in the grand scheme of things, but it’s part of what made him so likable.

I never met him personally, but it’s still a real shame to hear that he has passed. He clearly impacted a lot of people in a positive way.

I just heard this news on FB of all places. I had no idea. It's SHOCKING, to say the least.

Greg was my buddy. He and I had some amazing experiences in life, and he was my guide to a few Pennsylvania parks and milestones. He took me on everything from Phantom to Leap the Dips. He took me to the food villages in Pittsburgh. He made his home available to me.

After Greg got married, he brought his wife on a trip that took him through Seattle. He surprised me with a last minute phone call and I made a quick jaunt downtown to hang out at an art museum and just love on him and his lovely bride. I'm so glad I took that time, because it was the last time I saw him in person.

I'm floored. I love you, Greg. May you rest in the most wonderful peace.

I basically 'stallked' him @ CP closing weekend 2000. He was such a pleasure to talk to that we fast became coaster roomies. He even played tour guide for me @ Kennywood. I know I dont keep up with coaster stuff too much anymore, but we still kept in contact via FB. Like the true gentleman he was, he never publicized his recent health issues, instead only posting things inline with his sarcastic wit. I'll miss you Greg.
