Reedy Creek can't agree with firefighter union on contract

The union representing firefighters and paramedics at Walt Disney World has reached an impasse in negotiations for a new contract. Firefighters have been working without a contract with Reedy Creek, the Disney-controlled taxing district, since January.

Unfortunately this is all too common. Cleveland Police and Fire have been working without a contract for almost 3 years. Come January, they are supposed to start negotiating the next contract and they still haven't finalized the current one.

Most municipalities can't just give them more money because it's the right thing to do. That's generally true of most local public employees. If there isn't tax money to support it, what do you do?

That said, Reedy Creek isn't most municipalities.

You're not suggesting that the Disney company has any influence over Reedy Creek, are you? :-)

Pending the outcome of the current contract, they have received one 3% raise in 6 years.

That being said, I understand what you are saying.

I think part of the issue is that a successful (mutually agreeable) contract with the firefighters' union might "embolden" other unionized/unionizing employee groups.

Scott Walker is free now, maybe he could come help out. (*wink*)
