"enough is enough"-?

Yeah, but the cost of living in California is a lot more.

I'm in my first year, and getting paid $7.10 (That's in Canadian $$ though). My job is operating Vortex (Arrow suspended), and Shockwave (Mondial Top Scan), as well as the other positions on those rides (Load, exit, lift; grouper, loader). Lucky for me, we have very few double ops, so more often than not I'm operating Vortex, which reminds me so much of the train set I had when I was younger... except these trains weigh 6 tons...

Thanks for the answers to *my* questions, everyone :) It's too bad it's August, 'cause I'm really in the mood to go get a job at a park right now :) I need to get out of my house anyway.

Do you suppose that take experience into account? My first job led to me running, maintaining and repairing an iWERKS Turbo Theater for about 2 years. Plus, I'm studying mechanical engineering ;)

..about walking the track... as long as I'm firmly planted to the ground, or stairs, I *should* be okay :) I just had this scary mental image of me precariously hanging from the track somewhere out in the middle of the course, checking bolts :)

Vortexguy - is running a Top Scan fun? Are y'all given a lot freedom as to how to run the ride cycle? I would just love to have the power to torture people at my fingertips, what with those two knobs and all :)

Man, I wish. It is fun, as even as the operator you get to interact with the guests more than Vortex (and a lot of the other rides), but unfortunetly we're not allowed to run it in manual. Now, I have run it in manual before, but not with people on it. Very fun that way though, just like a big video game :)

Impressive too, as guests never see it run at full speed... You think it's intense as it normally runs... not even close.

But under normal operations, it's just a push a button and watch the ride thing...

IMO almost all you guys are underpaid....if you interact directly with guests, you are the single biggest source of PR/GR at the park....parks just don't understand how important good public relations are......makes ALL the difference between a bad day, an OK day, or a great day at the park.....and THAT determines how the park is presented to others.....

bill, saying Hersheypark happy is a feeling I took with me, and I've already told a dozen people to go there......

Oh, that's unfortunate. Maybe I'll have a chance at riding it this weekend, if I am nuts to enough to make the drive from my friend's place near Rochester, NY to PCW.

Here, at Adventureland, they *always* run it on manual. :) It's a blast, and is *insane* when it's running at full speed.

They run it at full speed loaded?!

When we run it at full, even empty, the entire structure shudders and shakes, that's why it's not run at full very often. I can't even imagine what it would look like running at full speed with people on it... Doesn't mean I wouldn't jump at the chance though :)

I'll double check with the ride op. the next time I'm there, but I always thought it was running at full speed.

It was broken for a time, and wouldn't go backwards, but they managed to fix that. Then they had a little accident with the manual overrides that left a good sized dent in the platform :) But, doesn't appear to shudder or shake at all.

Was yours new? Is it a permanent installation? The one here is 5 or so years old, too.

RCmuzikGuY, this is my first year working at Coney Island and I`ma ride operator, keep in mind that this park is not large (21 rides including kiddie rides) but it takes about 110 ride operators to keep them running! A lot of people have quit because of the low pay, and being stuck on rides like Baby Bumpers, which is not a lot of fun on a 95 degree day! Next year I might get a job as a ride op at PKI, but PKI is thirty minutes from my house and Coney Island is only about fifteen.

I totally agree with you but for different reasons. I get paid $6:50 to make sure that thousands of people have an enjoyable, but SAFE time at the park. Knowing this does put a lot of stress on a ride operator. However, I work best under stressful conditions so maybe that is why I enjoy doing it so much.

Hmm...

I used to work at Wet N Wild Las Vegas and I got $5.50 an hour for park rentals. My little sis works there now and gets $6.00 and they have a bonus of $0.75 an hour. There is an employee snack bar called the Canteen that sells stuff pretty cheap.

The Adventuredom at Circus Circus pays $6.50 to start and $7.00 when you become certified on all the rides/positions. You also get annual raises of a quarter. When I left, I was working in the office as well as rides so I got $8 an hour when in the office.

MGM Grand Adventures was the best as you started at $8.00 and got $0.50 raise every year.

Elevator and Ride ops at the Stratosphere start at $7.50 and Speed:The Ride ops make $6 an hour.
