Pre-judging coasters (A Rant)

I just hate how everyone here gets in a huff about fanboys. 300 miles? Sounds like fun to me. And I thought this was going to be a rant. Well?

And T-dawg, I'm just kidding. Sorry! You do make a good point.

But yah, I think most of us realize that no matter what we think of the video, you never know until you try it.

But again, where's the rant?

Oh yah, I guess I'm ranting.

Carry on. Carry on. ;)

People will say whatever in response to anything because they like to hear themselves talk...or type. Like me, right now.

Positive or negative, pre-judging is here to stay. I say let them pre-judge the same way they will post-judge after riding it. That is what enthusiasts do best.

We all need to learn to be more enthusiastic without any negative opinions. Unless of course you are high enough on the pecking order that you are allowed to be negative.
300 miles? Sounds like fun to me. And I thought this was going to be a rant. Well?

Do you want to travel 300miles and 6+ hours every single time you want to ride a coaster? I'm lucky to get to more than 2 parks. A year. Thankfully this year I got to go to Solace. Other than that? I went to 2 parks this summer. Last year I got fortunate and was able to take 2 trips, and hit 2 parks on each trip. However, I was so strapped for cash the rest of the year, I knew I wouldn't get to do that again.

I always mistakenly pre-judge coasters based on how the CAD video looks.

And on many of these computer-rendered videos, there's no sense of speed. It looks like you're looking down at a string of spaghetti slowly being slurped into your mouth as the track gracefully unwinds before you.

There aren't any objects flying by. Kinda like in the movie The Aviator where Howard Hughes says something about 'if there aren't any clouds, you can't see how fast the planes are going.'

Also, in these videos, there's usually no screaming, and no "coaster" sounds, which increase the sense of excitement. Maybe it's because I play them on my PC at work which has no sound. ;)

2Hostyl's right. There isn't enough bashing of the ultra enthusiastic positive pre-judgments. You know the "this is going to be the greatest ride ever. In fact, I'm going to quit my job right now and go wait in line, or at least where I think the line will be once they actually build it. This is sooooo cool. I had to change my underwear twice while watching the video, I was so excited. Yeah, man this coaster is the 8th wonder of the world. And MY park is the greatest thing in the history of civilization. Woooooooo!"

...that kind of prejudgment.

I wouldn't ever bash anyone who had any Idea what they were talking about. If they have a legitimate reason why the coaster will have problems(I.E. Charles Nungester's issue with restraints) based on previous experiences with that type of problem, then they're fine by me.

But seriously, people bashing El Toro are generally LAUGHABLE. Who the heck has ever complained about Collossus and Balder? El Toro's going to kick butt.

And so will Voyage, based on how much CCI coasters and Hades rule.

As long as you base it on previous experience, then you're probably right.

It can be difficult to articulate dissagreement with one's opinion in a respectiful manner by some people. Positive opinions are what generate excitement about our favorite businesses, and therefore make them more money. Negitive opinions about and disappointment with the product offered can help the industry too by showing them what they could have/can do better.

I see a push here on coasterbuzz for people to be "happy happy joy joy" about anything that could help the parks get bodies through the gates. I encourage everyone to try to ignore all of the happy language in a press release and simply think for themselves. I'm not accusing anyone of not having the ability to form their own opinions, rather I am challenging people to ask themselves if they are being overly influenced by the positive nature of a press release.
