Powerless SFWoA

I was just at SFWoA today (8-6) and while in line for X-Flight the power went out for the whole park. It went out at about 7:10. The only coaster that i saw stuck was ME. Only the rides werent running, all the lights and restaraunts were with power. They gave out free tickets to everyone, and i heard they gave out 2003 season passes to the people stuck on Mind Eraser.

Let me get stuck on a coaster. Preferably Millennium Force if they would give me a season pass. How long was the power out for?

Hey Man, I was working on X-Flight today! I'd be that one named Jesse! Well anyway, you were close, but incorrect. There was a power-surge at the park... shutting down several of the high powered rides. X-Flight actually had power and we concievibly could have been running, however, maintainence didn't want to draw any extra power away from their evacuation efforts... and they wouldn't let us operate. Well anyway, sorry we couldn't get ya on X-Flight.

How many times has this happened? I know it happened earlier this year earlier on in the day and now again.

Six Flags, the only chain of parks that can manage to have stacking with a one train operation.

Sounds like a lot of fun, I wanna get stuck on a coaster! I bet it gets pretty hot and claustrophobic however.
The first time, construction crews outside of the park cut the line accidentally. This time, well, I really don't know what happened, but apparently the problem occured within the parks power structure.

A power surge or a power dip? You'd have a lot more problems if it were a power surge, fried electronics and stuff. A power dip would shut stuff down (and is fairly common in hotter summer months and during storms) but would let you pretty much reset and reopen most attractions.

perhaps the park has some neat little devices often referred to as circuit breakers. maybe they even have some fuses in some of the rides ...

I got stuck on Mr. Hydes. After we dropped though. When we got to the farthest point after dropping, it's supposed to reverse back down. Well it didnt for us and we were stuck for about 15 minutes.

I got stuck on Batman's breakrun. Apparently the computer said something was wrong so it just stopped us there for about 10 minutes. Sucks too cause that was my mom's first ride on it. So she didn't like it as much as she could've liked it.

Both of those happened in 2000. The last one though, happened last year on Xflight. They reclined us and it seemed like we were ready to go. But then they waited a while and said that the ride was having troubles. So we lay on our backs for about 25 minutes watching birds fly over over heads through the station. There was a nest right above us so we all thought they were going to do their business on us. But 25 minutes later, after all of our blood was in our heads now, they brought us back up and started checking again. My friend though, who's slightly claustraphobic, was pretty much traumatized. I dought he'll ride Xflight again now.

Just a note, I didnt get jack squat for any of these. Maybe Sfwoa is even taking it one step further.

About the power, I don't know anything about all that circuit stuff, so this post was pretty pointless.

Well at least you were stuck on X-flight inside the station while waiting to be dispatched, I on the other hand have gotten stuck on Batwing's brake run while in the hot sun which wasn't a pleasant experience by any means.

This isn't the first time SFWOA has had a power outage, didn't they have an outage last year?

Point being? Breakers and fuses protect from overloads and short circuits. Too many amps being drawn by a motor, or wires being frayed are examples of this.

Power surges nor power dips have anything to do with circuit protection, since the fluctuation is in the voltage, and not the amperes. That's why they can be so dangerous (and also why you should have your computer on a surge supressor even if your house has those neat little fuses.)

Anyhow, neither of these scenarios would actually be the fault of the park. It's usually that of the power distributor or mother nature.

Wow... See, sometimes SF -does- take good care of their customers ! A season pass for getting stuck on a ride !?! That's what I call good service ! (of course, this is probably the exception to the rule)

and why those "surge supressors" use neat little fuses?

Okay, everyone who's an electrician at an amusement park raise their hand....

...

yep, just me.

Anywho, higher voltage results in lower amperage, which is why the fuses are no help in a surge situation, which this is looking less and less like. (And I know quite a bit about power surges affecting rides since I work on an Intamin Giant Drop, and they tend to get hit by lightning every 17 minutes or so.)

The refreshment stands and games apparently stayed open throughout this. This really leads me to believe it was a series of power dips.

To have a dip is the equivalent of unplugging your computer then plugging it back in really quickly. It has to go through setup, diagnostic, etc. This is what happens to all of the rides with computers or even more basic devices like timers or contactors/relays.

They did the right thing if this was a repeated occurance, I would've done the same. If the lights dim a few times in a restaurant, no one cares. If every third train gets stuck, however, that tends to be a problem.

They handled it well, it's a non-issue.

When the power went out at SFOG a few months ago, multiple rides were stuck. The worst problem was on Acrophobia. 200 feet in the air, dangling, tilted. The riders were stuck up there for about an hour and a half. In the end, they were lowered to the ground slowly when the power returned. To my knowledge, all they got was a walk on pass for the ride. For those of you who haven't been on the ride, it would be very uncomfortable after an hour and a half. I think they should have gotten free season passes too.

That would really suck... I wonder why they don't have a generator for the ride with all that Six Flags money being thrown around. Intamin recommends but doesn't supply them; we added a big diesel powered generator to our Giant Drop before we let it open.

actually with the incident on acrophobia, everyone was given a season pass!
I shure hope ALL tower type rides have generators. Coasters better have them to! But I bet when a ride suddenly loses power, the breaks could lock close and stop a train on the nearest break run, even without a generator.
