PKICentral.com adds Flight Commander video

Posted | Contributed by Dane186

PKICentral.com added a historical video of Intamin's Flight Commander at Kings Island. This video is the media video sent out from Kings Island back in 1990.

The second video is from Sept. 10 of PKI's tribute from the Heros of 9/11. Two skyjumpers jumped over the park with a huge flag attached to one of them. You can also check out some photos from the presentation in the photo gallery.

Also new in the photo gallery are the current condition of the sign construction and the Antique Cars razing, along with some Fearfest theming that has already been set up.

I loved the Intamin Flight Commander type rides, even if they were maintainance nightmares. I never rode this one, and looking at the video it seems like people entered from under the center of the ride. That's really wild. Never seen one of these rides load like that. So thanks for posting the news link.

Really cool video! I remember riding XL-1 or whatever it was called at Knott's when I was in 8th grade. It could be both the most gentle ride or the most frightening depending on who you were riding with.

I also have never seen one load like that before, was there a tunnel or something? It also looked like the pods stopped at a predetermined point so as to line up with the doors...

The ride was on an elevated platform, roughly 15 feet up. The platform is still there and is where the bungee trampolines have been the past few seasons. The entrance to the queue was to the left(?) and a tunnel ran to the staircase in the center.

There are also some pics of the Que line as it is today in the history section if your interested. And what they did to the sprial staircase.
Hope everyone liked the video. It looks better on tape, but for the web I had to make it small. Also be sure to check out my History Of Kings Island page on yahoo groups.
Yeah the line came from the left and entered the ride area from below the center. I still remember waiting in line for over 2 hours when it first opened, and being driven insane by a really awful video with an annoying woman explaining how you can fly the "planes" like a real jet pilot. Riiiiight. This has to have been the crappiest ride ever made. So it's really funny that they decide to dredge up the old marketing video for laughs...
Well...I like to think of crappy as a relative term. Yes, it was a "cheap thrill" it let you control movement which is something not many rides let you do today. So that in itself makes it special.
I got the chance to ride Flight Commander and it was a pretty novel idea. Wasn't a bad ride either.
It was a good idea gone bad. Well the video I have is old sorry you don't like it Puablo. Thought the others would like to see it.
