PKI officially announces Delirium

[Ed. note: Press release follows. The ride described appears to be a Huss Giant Frisbee. -J]

KINGS ISLAND, Ohio (Sept. 26, 2002) – de·lir·i·um (Dĭ-lîr’ē-um) n. A state of uncontrolled excitement or emotion.

Imagine being caught in the heart of a storm, hurtling through the air out of control. One moment suspended upside down, the next moment rushing face-first toward the ground then nearly upside down again … all in seconds. Experience the power of Delirium, one of several new attractions to debut at Paramount’s Kings Island in 2003.

Delirium is a powerful ride that will send 50 outward facing riders seated on a continuous ring with their legs dangling free in the air – spinning madly at the bottom of a giant arm that swings back and forth rocketing riders up to 137 feet in the air…more than thirteen thrilling stories! Riders will spiral in a 120-degree arc between 2 o’clock and 10 o’clock as the park races by on one of the most hair-raising escapades on the planet. Developed by Huss Rides of Germany, this blue, yellow and silver monster will be the largest of its kind in the world and be located in the Paramount Action Zone section of the park.

As previously announced, also new in Hanna-Barbera Land in 2003 is the imaginative “Scooby-Doo™ and the Haunted Castle.” Park guests will join Scooby-Doo and the entire Mystery, Inc. gang of Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy on the case to explain the mysterious activity of a green ghost haunting an ancient castle.

The animated adventure will begin as guests board their very own Mystery Machine that travels through ghostly graveyards, creepy corridors, and down into dingy dungeons. While winding through the castle, riders are equipped with Fright Light ghost blasters to zap ghosts and collect points. Points are tallied at the end of the experience to see who has the best ghost-zapping ability.

“For the first time in Paramount’s Kings Island’s history thrill-seeking guests and families with kids will be able to enjoy two multi-million dollar attractions designed specifically for them,” said Craig Ross, executive vice president and general manger. “There is something new for everyone in 2003… and we are not finished announcing new attractions yet.”

I will answer your questions as best I can...hopefully some other people can add a little more insight.

Huss: The Giant Top Spin had an OTSR, while the portable and permanent regular Top Spin rides feature OTSR's with the crotch bars. My guess is that the restraints for the Giant Frisbee will be similar to the regular Frsibee, perhaps with more advanced computerized back-up system if their Frisbee has an older one. Park and road models of standard Frisbees feature the same restraints as far as I know.

KMG/Chance: The Afterburner (aka Fireball, Wild Claw, etc.) features hard back fiberlass seating and the simple OTSR that is not accomadating to some larger guests. From what I have seen the seat structure KMG designed for the park (32 passenger) model looks the same, but I do not know if they added any padding.

Zamperla Discovery: I believe this will use a restraint system similar to the Power Surge (nearly identical OTSR's, micro-switches, etc.) and will be the same for both the park and trailer models.

A great addition to a great park. When I rode the Mondial version of this ride up in PCW, I was blown away. The ride looks intimidating, but isn't. It's very re-rideable, and has that "giggle factor" that all flats should have. I'd love to see one of these in Gurnee... :)

Will this ride be themed is my question? Every new ride recently has been themed will this one be? I know not to the extent of Tomb Raider but as much as Adventure Express or not themed at all?

Finally, it has been announced!

I have ridden a Intamin Gyro Swing (Drayton Manor) which also has outward facing seats but isn't as large. Let me tell you, if Delirium is anything like Drayton's Maelstrom, then we are in for one heck of a treat. I think there may be many surprised people next year.

maybe i'm blind, but is this ride a Huss Delirium, or a Huss giant top spin? It's called Delirium, and yesterday's descrption said "multi-armed," which points to a Delerium, but the info in the PR sounds more like a Giant Frisbee altered so the seats face out. Can anyone clue me in?

The "continuous ring" in the article gave it away. After I read that I knew it was a giant frisbee, which should be awesome. Paramount really loves these giant rides.

OK, you can all stop being assholes to Sawblade5 now, I think he gets the point. It's not clever or cute anymore.

We all forget the first Huss Giant ride PKI had, Skylab!

The first and only four per tub of it's type that I know of.

Hope the future isn't the same for the others.

Is it about coasters or friends? I say both!

Wow, PKI is really investing a lot into the park this year. I wish Busch Gardens would upgrade their flat rides!
