PETA wants feds to investigate dolphin death at Discovery Cove

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

PETA has asked for an investigation into the death of a dolphin at Discovery Cove said Wednesday that it learned about the death through a whistleblower. Busch Entertainment Corp., owner of Sea World's Discovery Cove, said Tuesday that Scarlet, a bottlenose dolphin, died this past weekend due to complications of pregnancy. The dolphin was 29.

PETA may be radical at times, but if organizations like this didn't exist living conditions for a lot of captive wild animals would be pretty poor.

I don't believe that for a second.

Really? How were factory employees treated before unionization?

Ahhh...no one told me this was a union dolphin! That changes everything! ;)

Carrie M. said:I like how the article indicates, "The Dolphin was 29." Uh, how about putting that into some context for the reader, eh? What's the life expectancy of a dolphin?

Of all the things to leave OUT of the article, this seems the most germane in terms of giving us what we'd need to begin thinking about the issue. What if the average life expectancy was 20 years?

[url][url]Ok, I am gonna step up on my soap box and say it.... PETA is a Terrorist Orgainization. They funded the terrorist that fire bombed Michigan state. check it out. http://www.amiannoying.com/(S(cdawx0yhoplq4qvpgi13gx55))/view.aspx?id=12919

PETA is a joke, plain and simple.

They do absolutely nothing to save animals except to scream, rant, cause radical demonstrations, etc. They want everyone to become vegans, no-one should own a house pet, all zoos and aquariums should cease to exist, no medical advances for humans if it means animal testing, and the list goes on and on.

Now an organization that actually helps animals is the ASPCA.

My wife is gonna be pissed if those dolphins have Actor's Equity cards. Or maybe she'd be pissed if they didn't. It's hard to say.

The average lifespan of a bottlenose dolphin in the wild is 20 years. They have been known to live to be 40 years old in living conditions such as Seaworld's. You take it from there.

I've been a lifelong member of PETA. Of course by my definition, PETA = People Eating Tasty Animals. :) :)

PETA has bad apples just like any organization. They have their share of zealots. If someone wants to be a total vegan the more power to them, just don't force your beliefs on me. I am going to eat meat as well as veggies. These are the type of people who put death threats on Ted Nugent's kids just because he likes to go bow hunting in his backyard. Ted Nugent is very humane if you've ever watched any of his hunting shows. He kills it. He eats it. PETA has been threatening him for years.

They can be VERY radical....everything from throwing paint on fur coats to protesting outside of fast food restaurants handing out "Unhappy Meals." I mean what's the point? I am sorry but I am not going to use a "humane fly catcher." I am going to smack it with a fly swatter.

If they care so much about animals and have so much money why don't they donate to the shelters? These places operate on a wing and a prayer. Why don't they spend some of those millions on spaying and neutering? Why don't they help out animal rescue organizations who go out of their way to recover abused and neglected animals?

For the record, i'm a member of the OTHER PeTA: People EATING Tasty Animals. Plus, I wear leather boots (work boots).

You guys saw how PeTA reacted when Obama swatted a misquito.

The guys aon "Whale Wars," care more about animals than PETA.

I disagree that this is a "normal" organization that has a few radicals within it. For years, the radicals have been at the forefront of all their circus tricks (pun intended). And there's been no effort by their leadership to reign them in, or distance the organization as a whole from their nonsense. So I would say anyone who wishes to get involved with this group at any level definitely knows what they stand for, and how they get their message out, so they're giving their approval.

This is the organization that has recently decided that people who eat meat should pay more for life insurance, petitioned Ben and Jerry's to produce their ice cream with human milk, and petitioned the group Phish to change their name to "Sea Kittens" to raise awareness that fish are intelligent creatures who should not be eaten by humans.

Actually, I would say since they believe humans are equal to all other species in their book, if we're not allowed to eat meat or fish, no other species should be either. PETA should immediately demand that lions, wolves, sharks, etc. refrain from eating animal flesh.

Yes, but if they just hung out and donated money to animal shelters, you all wouldn't be talking about them. The kookier they are, the more people pay attention. I'm pretty sure that's their goal.

Of course they don't expect Phish to change their name, or Ben & Jerry's to change to breast milk. They do it for the spectacle. Judging from the threads here every time they do something, it's working.

My short take on PETA: For every "don't wear fur" campaign that actually seems well-directed and effective in changing cultural attitudes, they seem to come up with three or four "how could Obama kill that fly" incidents that make their organization look like a bunch of wackos that should be ignored or ridiculed. The one issue where I think they could be most effective - joining with groups like Nature Conservancy (or whoever) to bring attention to the environmental impacts of raising meat for human consumption. Of course, that seems WAY too sensible for the people in charge of PETA.

What's scarier is they have a lot of celebrities that support them. That's where they get most of their money. And I agree that most of the stunts they try to pull is to draw attention to themselves.

They tried to come out with a "vegan" pet food for both dogs and cats a few years back. I don't know if it was successful or not. I guess they think it's wrong for natural carnivores to want to eat meat. This is how whacky these people are.

I wonder what these people do if one of their houses is infected by roaches or termites? Let them go about their business because it would be inhumane to kill them? ;) Please. That's sick.
