Pending lawsuits target Cedar Point and Kalahari in Sandusky

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Local thrill parks generate a ton of revenue for the community and lawsuits have become part of the cost of doing business. The majority of the lawsuits stem from injuries guests sustained on rides.

Read more from The Sandusky Register.

Right, blame it on the iPhone . . . vessel of the liberal media!

But in all seriousness, and back on topic: I'm sure many of us have stories of a time we were injured somewhere - whether at an amusement park, zoo, mall, or even a skating rink. The difference is, we didn't run straight to a lawyer and sue.

When I was kid (maybe around 10 yrs old) I had my fingernail ripped off on the Iron Dragon. I had my hands up, but because of the OTSR they were really off to the side - and my hand clipped a tree branch that was obviously way too close to the tracks. Was it my fault for not "keeping my hands inside the car at all times"? Sure. Was Cedar Point at least partly to blame for not trimming the tree's back enough? You bet. But did I (or my parents) even think of suing the park. Of course not! I went to 1st aid and got a band aid - end of story. Looking back, CP didn't even offer me anything to make up for it - but then again, I wasn't making a big deal of it or looking for anything either.

Sure some of these lawsuits may be legit due to operator error or equipment failure - but missing a step, or slipping on a wet pool deck? Come on!

And these are just the ones ongoing right now. I'm sure there are dozens of other frivolous lawsuits every single year that the parks have to waste their money fighting.

And even the people that agree with you aren't jumping to your defense on this. They're likely not reading most of your junk too.

Yeah, this is me. Has very little to do with the opinions, and everything to do with how it's presented.

And no, I don't think you're 'coaster' enough.

Sorry I don't meet your code/ideals of what you think this board should be. I thought it was a public forum. On a lot of sites they have member and public forums so the serious folks don't have to deal with newbies like me. I just came on here spouting opinions...nothing more and nothing less. I don't post political news stories. I comment on them.

As far as coasters, I've never been to a park I have not enjoyed (maybe Magic Mountain sucked...but Goliath was fun). I'm not certain what hurdles one must jump so you might consider one "coaster enough." I'm a grown man who just weathered record cold in Fort Lauderdale and risk of being arrested as a child molester for being the only adult frequenting a kiddy park...out-of-place indeed. If I see a ride...I ride it. My buddy is still making fun of me for going in there by myself. :)

Yet you seem fit to be judge and jury on my coaster-worthiness? Think about the depths you are going to judge somebody you don't even know?

But anyhow, my apology stands. Probably won't back down on the political opinions when you guys bring them up, but I'll make a better effort to keep my posts at least as short as your last couple response have been toward me.

LOL, yeah. The fact that it bothers you that I don't think you're coaster enough, and that you think I'm judge and jury, priceless.

I'm simply pointing out that I don't think you're here because of the same reasons the rest of us are and you're trying to hard. Not that it matters either way. I just think you look silly. If that bothers you, whatever.

Winding back on topic - I tripped on a branch while walking in Frontier Town at CP this past summer - skinning my knee. A guy saw it happen, got up off a bench and gave me his card, can you guess what he was? yep, ambulance chasing lawyer... I threw it in the bin and walked on to the bathroom to wash it off...

Maybe it was the same branch that fell from a tree outside Panda Express several years ago. A fellow I know was sitting outside eating and it hit him in the head.

Can someone please define "coaster enough"? I may have to review the guidelines and see if I still fit in here..

I've apologized for my long and brash posting style. I apologized that I've annoyed you Tek. I apologize that I started posting before realizing how tight nit a lot in this message forum are. I hope that some could find it in their hearts to forgive. I've promised to keep my posts shorter and to the point. I think that is reasonable. As for "coaster enough"...I'm not certain I need to apologize for liking coasters, but not with enough enthusiasm to meet you or anybody's standards.

Since we've already established that you have no problem with differing opinions, just styles...I figure the new/shorter posting style might put an end to your stalking insults. Fair enough?

Where does this "coaster enough" thing come from?

What does it mean?

It's so intense.

Josh, I wasn't being serious. He kept saying that so I responded. Basically I was trying to make a point about how he's trying too hard to fit in.

Is that apology accepted or same old, same old?

Actually I didn't read your post, but saying you're sorry that I got offended and then still calling me a stalker isn't much of an apology. Try this- instead of apologizing, realize that more than just one person pointed out that the main issue is your rambling on and on, control that, accept that this is a coaster centric crowd that is going to disagree with you, and participate as a member of the community, and not an outsider. You don't have to be hard core to fit in, but actually having And discussing something in common other than just politics while being open to learn about the community and topics would go a long way.

You really don't get it, do you?

Here is what I get - the fact that neither of you will let it go. Both of you just drop it for crying out loud.

Jerry is not your friend. Or Maverick for that matter.

Albert Einstein once said, "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. "

What were we discussing again?...

I have confidence that the court system works to figure out what kind of cases are frivolous and what kind of cases are deserving of being heard. Jury members are just normal people.

So keep that in mind when I say that I don't think it is up to anyone to complain about the people who do the suing. If they don't deserve it, the Jury will figure that out.

We were discussing ambulance chasing lawyers and frivolous lawsuits - Please note this is not a dis on the good attorney's who do good work out there.... LOL

PS does anyone know what the statute of limitations is on these kind of things? a year?

Since I was the one who mentioned the step incident outside the ice show, I have a question since I'm not familiar with the venue. Is there any other access that doesn't involve using stairs (e.g., barrier-free or accessible)? If there is, you could ask why this person wasn't using it?

If there isn't, there could be an issue of whether the park is meeting the needs of all its customers. But still, the idea that the requested settlement was far above any actual medical costs makes me less sympathetic toward this person. It sounds like she wants to use this incident to fix a lot of other problems in her life that have nothing to do with missing a step.

There is a barrier free exit - but it is not clearly marked - or marked well enough in my opinion...

I have walked down the steps in question many times - and they do seem a bit more challenging - with all the other people exiting onto them at various levels.

Also you often are coming out of a dark theater and your eyes do not have time to adjust to the sunlight.
