After doing a 100 Coaster blitz last summer, I decided to make the Summer of 2000 especially memorable by doubling my quota (to 200+ new coaster experiences in this calendar year). With that in mind, I just finished part one of a four part Summer Coaster barrage.
Flying to Pittsburgh Thursday nite with two coaster lovin' pals, we started the weekend right with a day at Kennywood, the first weekday of the
season. Although I had been there before, I wanted to revisit old favorite coasters before discovering new ones! We started with the rollicking EXTERMINATOR, getting in three rides with NO wait, then hopped over to Jack Rabbit. We next did the classic RACER and then headed to THUNDERBOLT, which unfortunately was closed for the day. (They were testing the new automatic braking system. No more hand brakes...) Finally, we would up our Kennywood stop with a goodbye to the ol' STEEL PHANTOM. After several glorious farewell rides, we hopped in the car and headed onto the Turnpike east.
We spent the night in Jackson, NJ ... all ready for a great day at SIX FLAGS GREAT ADVENTURE... A wonderful visit and NO LINES except for BATMAN & ROBIN; THE CHILLER. We got repeat rides on MEDUSA, ROLLING THUNDER, VIPER, BATMAN the RIDE and the lot, but opted for only ONE trip on the GREAT AMERICAN SCREAM MACHINE... (Screaming from headache pain, no doubt.)
At 2pm we zipped over to Allentown, PA to take advantage of Dorney Park's after 5pm deal. We arrived at 4pm, had dinner nearby and got to the gates at 4:55. For 13.95 we had the run of the park from 5 til 10pm. Unfortunately, a Typhoon hit us about 8:30pm and we (and about 100 others) sought shelter from the raging storm in the WHIP . It was surreal. Luckily, before the maelstrom we got to experience HERCULES, STEEL FORCE, THUNDERHAWK and LASER. Wild Mouse was testing but not yet open.
The next day (SUNDAY)found us at SIX FLAGS AMERICA, and with a nearly empty park. You were in PA and didn't stop at Knoebles! Shame on you. It's about an hour and a half from Allentown. You could have spent $3.50 and rode the Phoenix and Twister once and for another $1.70 you could have ridden the Whirlwind and High Speen Thrill Coaster as well. Twister is my #1 Wood..

Parks hit for 2000!
PKD,BGW,Knoebles,Dorney,Hershey
We did get to do Knoebel's last Summer... (and on the same day as Lakemont & Hershey) So, we actualy rode the oldest (Leap the Dips) and the newest (Twister) within hours of each other. Twister was so new that the carpenters were still working below us as we rode! But I loved Knoebel's and will efinitely get there again this summer, it just wasn't on the quickie 4 day trip list! Thanks for your input.
