Paramount's Great America announces Survivor The Ride

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Big time Hollywood-style reality thrills await adventurers this spring as Paramount’s Great America unleashes the world’s first reality rollercoaster, SURVIVOR The Ride. Based on the hit CBS series that returned for its 12th installment on Thursday, Feb. 2, the ride combines the excitement and feel of the show with classic theme park thrills.

Perhaps gravity is involved. I didn't pay close enough attention, I'm afraid, when I rode. Maybe the extended version will make it more apparent, and if it is gravity powered, well alrighty then.

Santino- eeeew

Nick- shame he didn't make it.

I know there was a video of the prototype testing in Europe floating around the net not too long ago, sure looked completely powered to me, no gravity involved from what I could see. But boasting you now have the most coasters in NorCal sure sounds impressive.

Anyone else notice that even though this is the park's 30th Anniversary, the only mention was a small blurb at the very end of their big 2006 announcement? Guess even they knew this was a pretty mediocre addition for PGA's Big 3 0, so downplay it as much as possible.

Say what you want about the theming aspect of this ride, it looks like alot of fun. And it all comes down to money. They'll be spending what? 3 million or so. That sure beats dropping 20+ million on a ride that doesn't work.

People will love this thing.

I was *almost certain* the regular version is completely under power, I have no idea about the full-scale upgraded version...it seems unnecessary to power the thing down the drops, even if you're powering the ride to keep it spinning (although the regular version spins considerably more than *I* would prefer, LOL)... ;)

If it's completely powered as far as uphill/downhill, then *I* won't count it myself...

As noted by DWeaver, regardless, it's a big addition for PGA, cost notwithstanding...seems like they're really GOING for the wet aspects of their park...

RCMAC said: But seriously, and I hate to go there, but hasn't anyone questioned the notion of considering this over grown flat a coaster to begin with? I rode a Disk-O at IAAPA and it seemed to be totally powered- just because this extended version has a coaster-type hill doesn't make it so. Anyone

What's wrong with a powered coaster? There 220 listed at rcdb.com. Maybe that's just one style of coaster you don't appreciate.

I'm not geeky enough start nit-picking about the difference between a Disk'O and a Rockin' Tug, which is a coaster and which is not. The fact remains they are both really fun. If anyone wants to call either one a coaster, that's their prerogative.

Ya know, I remember participating in the survey asking about themeing stuff... I remember writing a comment at the end "Whatever you do, DO NOT THEME ANYTHING AFTER SURVIVOR!!!"

Guess mine was a lone voice of reason...

As to weather a Disko is a Coaster... eh, there are so many hybrid rides out there today it's getting harder and harder to tell. I mean, those little butterfly things that are all over Europe... are THOSE really coasters?

Check out the video from Zamperlas site (dig those kewl disk colors!):

Have to agree with gator though, looks like it might spin a bit too fast for my personal taste. Especially facing outwards with nothing to focus on but everything around you spinning. Maybe that's why they're called it Survivor, see if you can Survive without being nailed by other rider's projectiled upchuck.*** This post was edited by jomo 2/24/2006 7:28:16 PM ***

Rule #1 of actually being cool: don't use 'kewl'. Ever. (well, unless you're making fun of that which you're referencing.. for example, if you think the colors are horrendous, then 'dig those kewl disk colors' would be an acceptable remark of disdain)

Eek! Paramount cannot get out of the "theme" park business fast enough IMO. Another poor name to promote a B-Class tv production.*** This post was edited by super7* 2/27/2006 9:10:05 AM ***
Not to be outdone, on an upcoming episode of "The Apprentice," two teams will head to a Universal theme park where they will compete to see who comes up with the better new flavor of Dippin' Dots.*
