PA Parks Questions

I stayed at the Country Inn & Suites for Phunfest and it's a really great hotel. The only problem is that it's quite a drive to and from the park, especially if it's late at night and you're not familiar with those roads. I think it took us about 45 minutes to get there from the park, leaving us wishing for a room at one of the Buckhorn or Danville hotels.

It really is a nice place though!

I hadn't even considered some of the hotels you've mentioned (espec the Quality Inn - we stayed at the one in Lancaster on last year's vacation and it was a nightmare!).

That Quality Inn in Lancaster is revolting. It looks nice from the outside, then they give you some nasty room at the back that smells and the furniture is about 50 yrs old and the carpet stained. I would expect that kind of standard for $20, but they were charging $69 (and that was with a travel coupon). Unfortunately, it was 11pm and everywhere else was full. If it wasn't for the cicada's I would have slept in the car.

I don't think all Quality Inns are that bad, I stayed at one near Silverwood and that was very nice.

For Knoebels, I stayed at the Red Roof Inn in Danville and that was okay, and there's a Friendly's there too, but you absolutely have to eat in Knoebels - best food ever and really good value.

I've heard that Red Roof Inn is okay, ditto for the Buckhorn Econo Lodge. As for the Danville Days Inn, millrace can probably throw in a few comments about the place. I understand he wasn't all that thrilled with it ;)
Hmmm....the Days Inn. Great place if you're looking for an adventure. It eventually turned out ok but it might take several trips to the front desk a couple room changes to get everything straightened out.

First off is that they use the hotel ballroom as a dance club so unless you want to be up all night be sure to ask for a room on the other side of the building.

I also neglected to ask for a non-smoking room and the scent of cigarettes was really strong. The bathroom was also dirty and the carpet was worn through to concrete in places. I asked for and got a different room which was much better.

And ever notice those little signs on the dresser that say if you forgot any toiletries you can go to the front desk and get a replacement? Well I forgot toothpaste and got directed to a vending machine. I put money in and the toothpaste got stuck. Back to the front desk for a refund. I then went to a *different* vending machine and the toothpaste got stuck again! Another trip to the front desk for a refund. 3rd times a charm and the toothpaste finally came out. Yes, I should have just left and gone to a store but there are not any stores nearby except for a gas station that sold toothbrushes but no toothpaste.

Bottom line: There are better options!

Rob, If I had known, I'd have picked you up at the Country Inn along the way... Coming from someone who's driven the road from Knoebel's a lot at night. There are one or two "knuckles" in the road that if you hit just right can give you some bonus airtime.

We paid more than that for a 1 bedroom suite, which ended up just two hotel rooms where one was converted into a living room/kitchen setup. It was at the very back of the hotel, very damp and very creepy. Yuck yuck yuck. The breakfast buffet was also very weird - there were some very curious characters eating there, no one was talking, just a very uncomfortable atmosphere. It was Thomas the Tank Engine week at Strasbourg Railroad and everything else in town that looked like it might be better was completely booked, so we just lived with it and spent as little time there as possible.

RGB: There's a chance we'll be staying there overnight for Knoebels' Opening Weekend on April 23rd so I will definitely keep you posted. Airtime roads are always fun... there's an airtime moment on the road to my girlfriend's place thanks to a railroad embankment and a weird kink in the curve! The road from Holiday World to Tell City IN also has some truly inspiring moments.

Rob,

Good. Can I come and use the pool???

One of the best spots on the way to Knoebels is just before 901 and 54W split. There's an abandoned railroad crossing there, and they never quite graded it away properly. Of course you have to make sure nobody's stopped up ahead waiting to make the left turn. Ooops.

Second spot. 54W coming down the hill where the water treatment facility is. I would think that it would be really cool for someone who would drive say 75 or so, which I personally NEVER do, to just coast down the hill, and if there were people in the back seat, they would put their arms up. Hypothetically speaking of course.

Always have to watch out for those weird kinks.
