The Wabash Blue Bird and NKP Blue Bird are the two greatest diesel paint schemes ever aside from the Warbonnet.

Doyle sure as his work cut out for him with that one Lumpy, but if anyone can do it he can.

And Maddie, a coaster enthusiast and a railfan, I may have to start stalking you. JOKING OF COURSE!

Doyle has come along way with the PA, since it left Mexico. I would welcome a visit to the Whitewater when it is complete.

I get a chill driving by tracks that are not there remembering High short hood GP-30's in West Unity and Zone on the old Wabash. I can still tell you what the last train thru Prattville was carying between the GP-7 and Green PC caboose- NH haybines on two flats, when was that 1972?

I felt so sad driving along Tenn. Pass two summers ago looking at rusted rail and signals waiting on trains that will never come.

Heck even last week I had to take US-2 from Spokane to Everet so that I could follow the Great Northern and find the mouth of Cascade Tunnel. I loved racing the stack train toward the sea on the down slope, I lost!

I will always remeber driving back to college one night in 1999. Conrail had just been taken over by NS and CSX and I was coming back from Jen's. I was taking US 6 west out of Edgerton and pacing TV-2 a very hot stack train led by two SD60I's and a SD50 at 60 mph the whole way. All of a sudden a headlight appeared out of the west as Mail-8 came flying towards us with 2 SD80MACs on point. At a combined 120 MPH it was a blur. 96 General Motors Diesel Cylinders counting those on my truck producing over 20,000 HP. The commerce of America pounding along 136 pounds to the yard, mile after mile. Steel wheel singing on steel rail, the real sound of America.

Conrail Quality was alive for me one last time that night.

You guys are bringing tears to my eyes. Keep it up, I'm enjoying this. It's beautiful man!!

Wood - anything else is an imitation

Hutchison, Kansas 1995 chasing an Espee train west out of town and into the sunset with an SD45 on point, grimy, rusty, loud, full of character, and screaming by at 65 MPH hell bound for Tucumcari on the Golden State Route.

Fast forward 3 years on a return trip, same place, same track but something is inexpicably different. Just then a headlight breaks the horizon, you wait as a train comes down upon you. But gone is the grimy, dusty, dirty, full of character SP on the nose, replaced by a bright shiny Armor Yellow and Grey paint job and a Union Pacific shield emblazoned across the wide cab of the oncoming C44-9W. What the Southern Pacific lacked in asthetics it surely made up for in character. The Friendly is no more.

What brings tears to my eyes is Ohio Central's cancellation of its steam program. :( :(

At least I got one final ride out of Sugar Creek last October

That's an encouraging sign and at least the steam power is safe but it's not the same without the daily excursions. Any chance of Hocking Valley running their steamer again?

I am under the impression that HV #33 was sold. Supposedly sold (after the shutdown) to Jerry Jacobsen which owns the OC. Hocking Valley started working on the 0-6-0 this past year though.

Just checked HV's website. #33 is still listed (but it wouldn't surprise me if it was sold) and they mentioned two others - the 0-6-0 and another one that I forgot already!

Looks like Cedar Point is the only place in Ohio currently operating steam locomotives (might as well keep this within the theme of Coasterbuzz!)

But PKI's are not "real" if you catch my drift.

With the huge investment put into the Grand Trunk 4-8-4 I just cannot see OC giving up on steam completely. Then again NS was in the process of a total rebuild of 1218 when they dropped their steam program.

Yeah, I catch your drift ;)

Well, from reading OC's website, it sounds like they are hanging on to the steam fleet and waiting out the economy. Some fall excursions are planned and maybe 2004 will bring more. Too bad the excursions don't fit my budget right now. :(

A small railroad museum near where I used to live in NJ closed this summer for much the same reasons. The museum will still exist but except for a couple of special events, it is closed to the public until further notice.

Jerry is a collector. So don't look for his steam to go anywhere's far from the OC Morgan Run shops. That is unless they go on lease to someone.

Count me in as a model railroader/railfan. I like steam, narrow gauge and logging railroads.

On 8-24-03 Sunday ,I will be riding the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad(www.mrsr.com if you want a link) then going over to WW/EV for some rides on Timberhawk, then the PNE on Monday. I will be in heaven on those days.

I am fortunate enough to have ridden behind two 4-8-4s. SP #4449 and SP&S #700.

------------------
Meet me at the PNE in 2003. Happy 45th birthday,Coaster!
