Other music games

Since Tiger of PTS wants to talk about Pop'n Music, I'll start this topic for him. ;)

So what other music games do you play? Of course it depends on what's available to you. The only other arcade games available to me are Pump It Up and Guitar Freaks. GF is a great game - love playing it... but it seems really hard. Even if I hit most of the notes, I fail. PIU is fun for a change but it's no DDR.

I was into Parappa the Rapper at one time but after DDR, it's no fun anymore.... I couldn't get into the sequel.

The game I really want to play is the one with the giant Japanese drum. I'd like to give Beatmania a try, too... anyone know where there's one in Ohio?

Frequency and amplitude. I don't play them becuase it is just like pressing buttons on a control pad eventhough it makes cool mixes. I rather use my feet in ddr then use my hands on a control pad eventhough im not creating mixes.

Coasterbuzz: Where it's okay to scream like a girl

Amplitude is a lot of fun though, I must admit. I like it a little better than Frequency. Still it's the same game. I just wish I could play it online sometime (don't have the adapter).

Now if I could get that 'What's Going On, Mekon' tune out of my head!!!! Got to write up a DWI file for that one. :)

Para Para Dancing and Dance Maniax are two of my favorites, with the Beat Mania and Guitar Freaks closing in.

My son has Frequency, and just got another game yesterday...I believe it's Amplitude. Like Chris said, I'm not into them because it just appears to be a "controller" game to me.

I got turned onto DDR because it was fun exercise.

Thank you Den!

I'd like to start this topic off by saying; yes, Pop'n Music does own. But that is not the only other music game I play.

I can beat anything to about A another's level in IIDX.

I can do up to about Level 95's in Drummania

I play Frequency and Amplitude..sometimes. Amplitude just for Kings of Rock and Cherry Lips.

Taiko no Tatsujin sucks hardcore so I don't play that.

And although Pop'n Music is my favorite Bemani, I'd have to say the most fun Bemani game is Mambo a GoGo.

Frequency (and I suppose Amp) aren't very fun at all until you play them online. After that, it's very fun. I play all the time.

Oh and who could forget the PaRappa series? Even though they've gotten incredibly weird, they're still IMO the origins of the music game.

Amplitude has been a game I have been completely addicted to since it came out. The graphics are far better than Frequency and the game seems a bit easier on the Normal level. Brutal is pretty tough and Insane is bound to give me carpal tunnel syndrome (if I already don't have it!). The song selection is rather unusual though.... POD's "Boom" (Crystal Method remix), Slipknot, David Bowie's "Everyone Says Hi", and that god-awful "supersprode" song are just some of the weird songs featured.

And of course, for those who still own a Sega Dreamcast, who can forget the insanely fun "Samba De Amigo"? I bought the $80 maraca controllers and the game is just a blast. The latin-flavored music (especially the Ricky Martin songs... ugh!) does get a bit tiresome, but the game is just so much fun, you actually start to get those songs stuck in your head. I got a copy of the Japanese "sequel" and it features the "Austin Powers" theme, the theme from "Rocky", and a bizarre version of The Wedding March. If you know anyone that has this game and the maracas, give it a try. I think DDR fans will love it.

I would buy Guitar Freaks in a second if they made a version for the American PS2. I'd buy the controller, too.

Seriously, do any arcades have Beatmania? I've never seen it in my life.

An arcade near where my mother used to live in the SF Bay area had a Beatmania machine. Didn't look that great to me. They also had a Guitar Freaks machine as well, and I loved that game. Total fun.

As for home games, I really loved Frequency, and I'm looking forward to Amplitude.

Guitar Freaks is a great game I play it every time I go to the arcade. A good one for the PS2 is Gitaroo Man. It is a crazy Japanese made game with great music, funny characters, and is quite a challenge.

Are we forgetting Mario Paint? Introduced for Super Nintendo in 1992, you were able to create your own song in one section of the game called "Piano Keys". Barrels of fun.

Speaking of Mario, the SNES game "Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars" (or something like that) had a musical code. It was too cool. Three times, after you got a certain letter pattern, you had to return to this house and enter the "notes" on a "staff" that was in a lake behind the house.

Then for the fourth "measure," you got to enter any notes that you wanted. When you were done, the game would play an orchestrated version of your song with the customized ending. Very cool.
