Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights Final Year

Disney announced today that this will be the final year of the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights in order to make way for the Star Wars and Toy Story attractions. While this was expected and this does mean that the new attractions are happening sooner rather than later it is still a bummer to lose such a neat holiday event at Walt Disney World.

I call shenanigans. Those aren't the only streets with buildings, and I don't buy it that this is it.

The band Mulch, Sweat & Shears is also ending their run at the Studios in October. While not a major attraction, they were always fun whenever we caught them. Perhaps they will start touring the country like Off Kilter.

Never understood the appeal. Sort of understood it when it was some Yahoo in Arkansas, trying to be Jon Gotti of the Ozarks. I've always thought the over the top garish display in a theme park just seemed in poor taste. I fully admit that I'm the only one, and the fact that it has been successful for 20 years just proves why I'm not in charge of these things.

I think it's visually interesting, and with updated control systems and LED's that can be dimmed, it has gotten better over the years. They just pack in the people, which is why I'm skeptical that they're going to simply abandon it entirely.

Disney couldn't afford the Osborne family's asking price for the IP.... ;~P

The Osbornes have a show at Disney? What, do they hand out free drugs? Do they sensor the profanity?

You probably wanna do a little more research.

I'm pretty bummed over this announcement; if in fact the show is going away permanantly. It's a "must do" in my opinion if you ever visit WDW during the holidays. My wife and I hit it every time we are in town for our annual December WDW trip.

Over the years, it seemed to only grow in popularity; even when I visit in early December, that area of the park is always packed with guests. Some of my best PhotoPass photos are with the dancing lights in the background. I certainly hope there are plans to continue the show in a different location.

It does seem like there are other places they could go. Heck, you could even put them on Hollywood Blvd and Sunset Blvd, though that could create some nasty crowds with Fantasmic. But, the announcement seemed fairly clear...time will tell, I guess.

But is the family black?
