Orlando theme park attractions that closed in 2014

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

From musical acts to entire ride collections, a number of attractions closed for good this year around Central Florida.

See the photos from The Orlando Sentinel.

I think nascar sucks and don't get the wow factor. And I live and work in the birthplace of it. I've met a majority of the team leads for the top racing teams. Couldn't care any less about it, and don't consider it a sport.

But I'm not belittling a group of people based on the face they like something I don't.

To be honest, the way you're 'trashing' them shows that you don't get it. That's all fine and dandy, but it comes across as being that condescending guy who thinks he's better because he doesn't like that thing that a lot of people do.

I'm sure some of your customers like the sport.

I'm not sure theme park enthusiasts have a lot of room to look down on NASCAR fans.

Coaster enthusiasts can certainly look down; they just won't see anything below their belts.

Most everyone has a really stupid hobby, or lame favorite band, or whatever. When people are embarrassed to tell me that they are fans of Nickleback, or Nascar, or that they love to paint Dungeons and Dragons figurines, I find it cute. A lot of people like to ride roller coasters a few times a year, but how insane must it seem to them for someone that they know to be so obsessed with roller coasters that they actually join roller coaster enthusiast clubs, attend events, or even create a website or amusement park-centered photography business around the hobby?

In saying that, I do not understand people's preoccupation with Nascar. I also don't understand certain religions, but that doesn't make me want to belittle them.

Everyone is different.™

I have never understood football. Why is that fun to watch? What's the point of the game?

But I know that even as I don't get football, there are many people who would question me -- driving from Chicago to Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine and New York State to ride roller coasters during ACE's 2013 convention makes perfect sense to me...

It's still rude and condescending to say that people that like NASCAR are lesser individuals.

Sport of toothless unwashed bigoted rednecks. I got caught up in the caravan from Atlanta to Talladega on the first Rip Roarin' Rampage weekend. Had no clue the race was that same weekend. I have never seen so many Confederate flags in my life. It was a Cletus and Cooter convention.

Slithernoggin, that's exactly my attitude towards football as well. My mind can not emotionally connect with anything about it. I've tried, because I don't want to be "that guy" who doesn't enjoy something everyone else seems too. I WANT to be able to have conversations about football with other people. I just can't. I'm not wired that way. I can pretend for a very short time. After that, I lose interest so strongly that I almost lose consciousness. Seriously. lol

I'm the strange one. Not them. And because of that, I kind of hate football.

Roller coaster enthusiasts? Don't get me started.

Hobby of overweight, mouth breathing, gravy drinkers with bad haircuts. I got caught up in a group of them at the park last time I visited. Had no clue an event was happening that weekend. I have never seen so many fanny packs in my life. It was a total sausage convention.

Of all the glass houses to be throwing stones in...

Well, ya know, everybody has their own thing.

It is interesting that certain hobbies, actually pre-occupations, seem to draw certain types and sub-cultures seem to grow up around them.
It's easy to stereotype fans of NASCAR, 'rasslin, monster trucks, rodeos, and have you ever seen the crowd at the roller derby? Yikes! But stereotypes are often built on certain truths, and if I cast a sport or hobby onto a certain type or socioeconomic status I don't feel all that bad about it. It is what it is.

And on the other hand there's fans of golf, opera, tennis, theatre, symphony, fashion, yachting, and I don't know what else, but I'm willing to bet the NASCAR fans would prefer not to be like them, would prefer not to know them, and make just as much fun of them.

So the final question here might be: does the fan make the activity what it is or does the activity make the fan what they are? I don't know the answer, but I am grateful that there seems to something out there for everybody.

Maybe it's a case of varying demographics in different parts of the country, but when I go to one of the races each year at Texas Motor Speedway, I see far more ethnic diversity there than I do at the average Texas Rangers game or especially at a Dallas Stars hockey game.

Right on Gonch. That's a given (though you did fail to mention patch jackets, or am I just showing my age?).

How does one define diversity at a NASCAR event? In Texas?

One of my favorite Sunday past times is watching the highlight reels of a NASCAR race and playing spot the Asian or African American. It's usually a futile effort.

Man, advertisers these days are getting shameless. Even placing their products amidst opening prayers. This is out of control. :)

I have no problem calling anyone out for unfairly furthering a stereotype. Travis, you, anyone.
