Opening day walkback scheduled for enthusiasts at Dominion

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Paramount's Kings Dominion PR Manager Mark Riddell had this to say in an e-mail letter today about Drop Zone, the park's new drop tower:

"Paramount's Kings Dominion will open as scheduled THIS Saturday, March 22nd at 10 AM for our 28th season! Woohoo!

Drop Zone is getting rave reviews from guests and staff who have ridden and we want to add as many enthusiast voices as possible to those reviews!

We are offering enthusiasts a walk back opportunity for Drop Zone on opening day. I will meet interested enthusiasts at the walkway directly behind the Berserker beginning at 10 AM. We'll walk at 10:15 AM - don't be late! Those folks who walk back with us will be put first in line to experience the awesome 305-foot Drop Zone. If there is a late opening of the ride, you still will have the opportunity to wait first in line. I'll even sweeten the deal by offering a special surprise to those who show up while my supplies last. What could it be?

You have probably seen information posted online (by folks who attended our 'Dry Run' day last Saturday) about the Drop Zone restraints ability to accommodate guests with broad shoulders and/or large upper bodies. I'm happy to report that at least 20 seats are now retrofitted to accommodate more guests. We eventually intend to modify all 56 seat positions.

Also opening on Saturday is SpongeBob 3-D in the Action F/X Theatre. The film is hilarious - even if you don't know Plankton from Patrick - you'll love the 3-D action of the ride!"

Hmmm... I wonder what the special surprise is....

I can't make it but I'll be at PKD next weekend to ride my favorite rides again!

It's great to hear that they've made a somewhat successful attempt to retro fit at least some of the seats at this point to accomadate larger guests & that the entire ride will be converted as soon as possible.

As for the "special surprise" I think he's reffering to free season passes, man I wish I were able to make it on opening day for that but I gotta wait until july before I can get down there.

Which ride is Berserker ? Is that the ride that is on the left side of the midway where the fountains are ? Also do I have to have any special club memebership to take part in the walk back? All you need to do is ask me anything on roller coaster, and I think that is more then enough to let anyone know im a coaster lover.*** This post was edited by WoodenCyclone 3/20/2003 5:51:12 PM ***
Yes, Berserker is the inverting pirate ship. I wouldn't plan on having to break out a club card. Probably all you need is a coaster t-shirt. Like any of us own one of those:)

If you have a problem with clones, the solution is real simple—Stop traveling.
I doubt they'll give out season passes because most coaster enthusiasts would have a Paramount season pass, like having a Six Flags Pass. My guess would be "Front of the Line" pass.

My thought about the special surprise would be merchandise featuring Drop Zone. I too doubt they'll hand out season passes to everyone.

I'd say Drop Zone merch sounds like the safest bet.

LOL,Berserker is more like the inverter ship from hell because that thing hurts worse than any other ride in the park except Shockwave.
Arg...so close but so far!

Im going on saturday for opening day, but i cant make it until noon. My mom picks the one day out of the entire season for the entire family to go...why does it *have* to be opening?!?!

Oh well, i hope the people that make it in time enjoy it!

I don't think Berserker hurts really. It hurts when they lower the bars on you, but they let up if you're lucky. I've had them not raise up too many times. But I just slip around anyway!

Once you're used to it

That's not it at all, when I rode Berserker the restraints were just fine until we started doing the full inversions.

If the horsecollar were a standard size & not the small ones that go just to your ribcage then it can distribute the load more evenly instead of across the upper chest & shoulder blades,I don't mind the restraints on SFA's Iron eagle because they provide the much needed even weight distribution.

Coasterdude04 what's so bad about going to PKD on opening day?man if I were in your shoes I would be jumping for joy & if I could I'd trade place with you in a heartbeat,I've gotta wait til july before I get to experience the intamin goodness that is DZ at PKD,but at least SFA's opening weekend is coming up soon & I'm definitely going, too bad not on the 12 but for sure on the 13th.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Often during the ride, while I'm slipping in and out of my seat, the restrait will get even tighter, and then it gets unconfortable. It'd be really nice if they would change it. I've never been on any other Inverted Ships, but are they all the same or are some more comfortable? Also, they should make one with each person has their own seat, like on a coaster, then the things wouldn't be so high to distrupt your view. ;/

OoOo, I'd love to see some new restraits!

I havn't ridden any other inverter ships either so I can't say for sure if they have different restraints or not.
Well the Revoulition at PGA sounds like the same ride to me no one I know will ride that thing due to the painfull restraints

I was there! It was pretty cool openning day, but unfortionatly, or not for me, I wasn't on the first run of Drop Zone. I did, however, walk down the path towards the ride when they openned the paths leading down, but instead of heading to that and getting a first ride, I headed to Rebel Yell to get the ride on my 99th coaster. Then I hit Hypersonic XLC, my grand 100th coaster I have been on! Im only 15, so I hoping that record doubles within the next few years!
