One person killed, dozens injured at Kennywood in storm

Posted | Contributed by FoF

A 29-year old woman was killed and dozens were injured Friday night at Kennywood Park, where the roof of a structure that houses a ride collapsed in severe storms. As of Sunday, 10 remained hospitalized. The accident happened around 7 p.m. at The Whip, which is in the Lost Kennywood area of the amusement park. A spokeswoman said there were riders on the Whip's 16 cars when the roof collapsed. People were reportedly running for safety as trees fell, branches snapped off, and debris flew around in winds that reached 80 mph.

I live just under 5 miles from the park by car, even less as the crow flies. I just got home this evening from SRM to a real mess. There are trees down all over the place, and some of my neighbors still don't have power. I haven't had a chance to check out the damage at the park yet, but I hear it's even worse than what I see here.

This is the SECOND time my neighborhood has been hit with a storm strong enough to fell trees in under a month. Scary stuff.

Sorry to everyone that was affected by this storm (not just the park). Mother Nature can really wreak havoc.

Jeff, I'm not sure why you apologized about not posting the story, as you were away on vacation. No apology was necessary. Consider that the F5 tornado that hit LaPlata Maryland recently wasn' too far from Six Flags America.

Try the themepark diet now! Just walk vigorously around large parks for a week. "It really works!", says I-Fan who lost 1 inch off his waist in a week while in Texas.
It was an unfortunate event for all involved. I hope they can get the Whip running again eventually. It houses one of my first memories of any amusement park.

I just heard on the news that Kennywood might make an announcement on Monday afternoon as to when they plan to reopen....

Also, if you had tickets for this past weekend (or any upcoming closed days), the tickets will be good any time this season or next season.

The news just absolutely stopped everyone's SRM enthusiasm for awhile. I got word while in line for Legend and did not want to believe it. I hope everyone recovers from this and the park can get back on its feet soon. How ironic that I had just ridden the Whip a week before. Its terrible to know that another life has been lost. :(

That was a wicked storm. I was having dinner at a restaurant when it happened. Traffic was diverted from Kennywood boulevard and trees were down in neighboring Munhall and Homestead. Even the Waterfront lights were out. I got lost and it took me a while to get home. My power was out for a while and it came on very early Sunday morning. I am fine now. My girlfriend and I were planning a Saturday visit. That has been postponed.

My sympathies for those who were injured or killed in this freak incident. I have visited Kennywood only once, as I live in CA. It is a class act as far as parks go.

Maybe Rep. Markey can conveine a committee to look into regulating weather at amusement parks. This should be yet another opportunity for political grandstanding, or whoring, depending on how you view it.

The park will open tomorrow for the first time since when they closed the park Friday evening:) The structure that covered the whip has been cleared. And the Whip itself isn't that bad of shape which is some good news!
