At the time of the purchase, the now defunct Garfield themed park was nearing fruition. Lo-and-behold Six Flags buys up Old Indiana and all of the sudden coaster track and numerous dissassembled rides were shipped there.
Next, the proposed Garfield park idea is scrapped and Six Flags never even hints at re-openeing or assembling the rides now stored at Old Indiana. If the Garfield park had opened, then it would have pulled from the Chicago and Indianapolis areas. Indianapolis is an area that Six Flags markets their Kentucky Kingdom park to. Chicago, of course, is home to Great America.
So just by shipping some old, out of date rides from closed parks to the spot, they stratigically scared off a competitor.
I don't think SF ever had any intention, nor ever will, of re-opening the park. It is in the middle of nowhere, has a terrible past hanging over it's head, and would cost the park tons in updates and improvements.
That's business folks!
