Northeaster Trip Help?!

Well next year I think our family is going on a big PA, East Coast trip. After we go to Six Flags Great Adventure, we're going to Six Flags New England.

But heres the problem, on the way to Sfne, we'll most likely visit one park on the way there. So I have a choice to make if this is so. Either go to Coney Island or go to Lake Compounce??? I want to know what park you guys think is the better all around choice. I dont really care about which park has more history to it or so on, honestly i just want the best all around park. Which do you guys think would be better?

Edit: Just had to fix all the bad grammer, I had to rush this post in because I had to go somewhere. You can tell by looking at the name of the topic lol. Theres not supposed to be an "r" as you mightve caught

Well it depends if you've been to the parks but I would say Lake Compounce. I dislike the carnival type rides that Coney Island has. An excellent CCI woodie, a Dinn Woodie, and a boomerang versus the Coney Island Cyclone. Tough decision but I would prefer a CCI over the Cyclone.

I was sort of steering that way. I would just like the atmosphere better at Compounce I think.

I don't know how much my family likes NY anyway.....If we do go to Coney though, the only upside would be that I persuaded my mom for us to go see Conan!!! I watch his show every night lol.

But overall for the rides and atmosphere I think we might go to Compounce. I'd like to hear more input though.....

PS: sorry for putting this thread in the wrong section. I was in a rush and just didnt see that i put it in the trip reports.

Thats a tough one. Coney Island is more so a carnival than a park (actually 3 parks now). Coney Island can be expensive but what isn't in NYC. Coney Island has several Darkrides, The Cyclone, Wonder Wheel, and a Jumbo Jet.

Lake Compounce is more of a typical old fashioned park like Knoebels or Kennywood. They have the coasters as stated above in coasterzach1's post along with an average selection of flats.

I don't know which I'd pick to tell you the truth. What do you like in park?

Honestly I hate carnivals, lol. I just don't like the atmosphere, thats why I think when it becomes decision time I might pick Compounce.

The only thing we'd prolly do at Coney is the Cyclone. At Compounce I think It might be a lot nicer, we'd have a little more to do. But I've never been there, so I dont really know....oh well.

Exactly how expensive is Coney??? I think the only thing we'd do there is The Cyclone, so do they have like just have tickets that you can buy just for a ride on it. I wouldn't want to spend more than a half day there honestly. How would the price of a day pass to Coney compare to Compoune? That might be the real decision maker lol, never thought about the prices.

Well, there is Rye, Playland. It has the classic Dragon Coaster which is not thrilling by any means, but a peice of history to be enjoyed for what it is, not hated for what it is not. They were suppose to get a spinning wild mouse coaster this year, but that was canned for some odd reason. Next year is their 75th anniversary so they might be adding it then along with something special maybe? (Aeroplane coaster recreation PLEASE). Ok, maybe not that, but something. It has three dark rides, two of which are fantastic, many flat rides, and a great location on the long island sound. I am not sure if there are any hotels nearby, but a look at their web site may clear things up.

Lake Compounce is a great little park, and a bargain if you can find a coupon (16$ off!). It is a park in which you can do everything in a short period of time so that may be an advantage. It is the most quiet of the three (coney island, playland, lc) and based on my experience has the friendliest people (employees and general public). There are some flat rides, a couple of good water rides, and one really fun dark ride in Ghost Hunt. Not to mention it has a truly awsome coaster in Boulder Dash!

Hope this helped!

coastingohio - you'd probably have a better time hitting lake compounce. im not knocking the cyclone, becauses its great, and if you can swing on through real quick go for a ride (or two...or three :) ) but lake compounce will def. offer a better time for you and your family. if you have young children you may also wanna swing to upstate ny, and hit The Great Escape. Its a great park to bring the little ones to. We havent recieved any new rides really in the last couple of years unless you count the Eurobungy and Skycoaster, but the park is pretty good even though SF has neglected it. A ride on The Comet is we'll worth visting the park if you havent ever been there. Its a great woodie that all will enjoy.

I think the Cyclone is $5 a ride $4 rerides. Astroland has Ride passes that are good for a few hours and a few rides on the Cyclone. I think the passes are good for 2 or 3 hours. I'm not sure how it works with the Cyclone but you can keep getting reride after reride riding it the entire pass time.

I'd say to get the pass and hit the other rides like the Wonder Wheel, Jumbo Jet, and the dark rides your looking at about $30.

I was only there once so i'm not too familar with it.

Yes, the Lake would probably be a better choice (not traffic to fight and it's only about an hour from SFNE). Jumbo Jet is still down at Coney so the only coaster (not counting the kiddies) would be the Cyclone and if you want good wood Boulder Dash will more than deliver. Lake Compounce is just a really nice small park.

If you do choose Coney and Conan, call as soon as possible for tix. They're first come. My wife took me to see Conan for my birthday, we ended up in the second row and got a full 5 seconds of face time on TV when they picked an audience member to help Conan "drive" his desk. In fact they just reran that episode the Monday before last. Might want to look into Letterman too, another great live show! Plus you just turned 16 so you're old enough to get in now!

Back on subject, Coney Island is definitely a must do but given your choices, I'd probably head to Bristol.

A Dinn woodie?

Boulderdash = CCI.

Wildcat = Herb Schmeck and Dinn? (according to RCDB????)

I think that should read Herb Schmeck and PTC, not Dinn

Kind of hard to take a post as objective if a park or coaster name is part of the "user name"

I hate coney island. I think the lake and am actually going there tomorrow :). I think you will dislike the carnival rides at coney but will like all the rides at the lake. Also if you like water parks the lake is a plus. And in my opinion one ride on boulder dash is worth a day at coney. The zoomerang is one of my favorite boomerangs. And The cyclone isn't even that great. Lastly the lake is usally not that crowded but sadley coney for some reason is usally pretty busy. Be smart and take the lake.

P.S there is less traffic :)

Definatly go to Lake Compounce. Boulder Dash is amazing. I think that Lake Compounce has the friendliest employees. Don't go to Coney Island if the Cyclone is the only thing you want to do. I think it will be a waste of time. Lake Compounce costs $23.95 to get in I think. Go to my lake compounce site for information and a review of the park. The link is below.

Thanks everyone, I'm already really excited about this trip. I think that we'll go to Compounce and skip over NY. But if my family decides that they want to visit NY, then I WILL definately call for Conan tickets, lol. We were there a long time ago and tried to get Letterman tickets, but as you know, they're first come first serve and they only have so many, so it was impossible. If we do go to Coney then I'll prolly just ride Cyclone once or twice. Honestly I don't see how it can be thattt good, I'd rather ride a CCI. I've never ridden Cyclone, but after riding T-bolt, I can say that I'm not into those type of oldies. I'm more into the Jack Rabbit at Kennywood if I had to pick an old woody. They dont even have a restraint on that thing, and a double dip from hell, lol. Thanks for the input and I have no dought if I have to pick between the 2 it'll be Compounce.

PS: Lord Gonchar, I think I saw that episode, since I watch Conan every night. Was it a guy he picked out from the crowd? or a girl? I saw one about a week ago where he picked out a guy to do it, so I could've spotted you, lol.

It was a guy. One of the funniest "desk driving" skits ever. At the end E.T. flew them away. Me, my wife and 2 friends are on screen the whole time Conan is picking the guy out of the audience. Conan isn't nearly as freakish looking in person either...and his head seems smaller than on TV. :)

I think the Lake is a wise choice. We hit 9 parks/piers in 5 days at the beginning of the month and Lake Compounce was easily the standout park of the trip. So much so that we caught a manager on the way out to let him know what a great park they had.

Kool, that was the Conan I saw with that. I can't wait for his repeats to show on Comedy Central. Now I don't have to stay up every night during the school yr.

I guess no one really answered this to the full extent. But how would prices compare between Coney and Compounce? Like full day passes at both places. And I think some of you have already said, but how much would a coupon get off at one of these places, and where would we get them?

I know I've said this but I really think I'm leaning toward Compounce, I just want to know the comparison of prices now, lol.

You'll get by cheaper at Lake Compounce overall, I would think. The free soda helps :)

I also don't know if it'd be possible to blow an entire day at Coney. We only spent 2 or 3 hours and that included getting something to eat on the boardwalk and letting my daughter ride a bunch of kiddie rides and we didn't feel like we were leaving too soon.

Compounce has free soda?! lol. Alright I think that might put Compounce way over the competition. Plus I guess it's less expensive too, thats awesome.
