New Superman roller coaster stalls on top of ride at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom

Posted | Contributed by Jeff

Twelve riders spent more than an hour Sunday stuck atop a new roller coaster at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, suspended 15 stories in the air until park workers were able to bring them back to earth.

Read more and see video from The San Francisco Chronicle and KCBS/San Francisco.

It's fairly unusual, actually, and I thought it was worth posting because the ride is new and fairly unique.

Not sure how long it was after they got stuck, but the were brought up water when the crane came up.

I guess I'm just a fan of having a good story to tell later, so that's how I'd view being stuck up there that long. :D

Sadly, everyone seems to have a story about when they were stuck on a roller coaster and many include being stuck upside down (until they released the magnets).

It is fairly common for roller coasters to stop on the lift or on a brake. In fact, I seem to recall a story of someone being on SFA's S:RoS when the chain broke. It's sadly semi common (once every couple years) for a boomerang of one style or another to valley in the middle of the cobra roll or between the cobra roll and the loop. It's pretty uncommon (twice on TTD, are the only other times I can think of) for a ride to end up stuck at its highest point in an unanticipated way.

Stuck upside down seems like a newsworthy story for the camera crews to come out. But imagine if they sent out "action news" every time a boomerang valleyed. It would become old real fast. :D

It is quite rare. But, TTD had that happen more than 2 times. I believe it was 5 times. Twice (maybe 3 times) with people on it.

I'm not aware of it happening on Kingda Ka.

^^That's because the ride has to be running regularly in order to get stuck.

The amusement park rises bold and stark..kids are huddled on the beach in a mist

But it had at least 500 people riding those 2-3 trains if you believe everyone that claims they were on it when it got stuck at the top.

For the record, I have never been stuck on TTD, not even a rollback. :(

Before you can be older and wiser you first have to be young and stupid.

Yeah. Everyone seems to have gotten a rollback on TTD or KK also, even though I bet it's less than 1 train a day.

I've had a rollback.

And there were 150,000 people who saw Len Barker's perfect game in person even though the attendance was about 7,300 and the stadium's capacity was about 74,000.

Anyway...

The number of rollbacks has dramatically decreased over the years. The occurrence rate probably won't get any lower. They seem to be doing about all they can do to prevent them. I'm sure there are pretty strict weather criteria to get the ride going in the morning. Also, I'm not sure if it's every morning or just cold mornings. But, they will send trains out empty until they are all clearing. Then, after letting guests in line, they will fill up 3 rows, make sure the trains all clear, then slowly add a row at a time until full trains are clearing the hill. Your best chance for a rollback is on a cold windy day and manage to get on a train when they add a row of people.

I had a rollback on Dragter in October 2006. Yes it was cold and windy with intermittent sprinkles.

When SFKK still had its boomerang in 1999, it was getting stuck so often that a TV station left one of their trucks parked just outside the fence in the state-owned parking lot.

How often can you cover the same non-story and make people care?

Clearly you haven't watched cable news channels lately...

This story (complete with the picture of the crane basket next to the train) made the front page, above the fold of the Toledo Blade on 7/31. Didn't we win some Olympic medals or bomb somebody? There surely must have been something more newsworthy to put in that place.

I'm not sure. Why don't we ask Timber-Rider?
