I removed the entire article for two reasons. One, it's copyright infringement. You can't copy and paste stuff into the forum. Two, it makes a lot more sense to provide a link to it instead of needlessly duplicating it.

Thanks.

Jeff,

Since I had put down who wrote it, who published it and the fact that it was sent to me in an email BY the newspaper, I thought I had the bases covered.  Guess not.

Anyhoo, here is a link (after a lot of searching mind you) to the article on the web, not sure how much longer it will be up though.

Actually I don't think that this has anything to do with Six Flags, secondly the actual park will be in Iowa (Crater Lake I believe which is a suburb of Omaha.  Being an Iowan, I'm pretty happy about it as we don't have much to cheer for.  But having three parks with a population of around three million people is cool.

Just wait till next year!
You're right VF fan, it doesn't have to do with SixFlags, it was a joke.  You know how, or maybe you don't, for the longest time there was a rumor going around RRC/URC that there would be a "SixFlags over Nebraska", well it's finally true, sort of.  The main jest of the thing was to pose the question, "how long before SFInc buys THIS park."

-----------------

This sounds awfully tentative.  I'll be shocked if they meet the schedule quoted for construction this year and opening in 2003.

I'm also confused by an 80 acre park that will be open in Nebraska all year.  In that climate, all year operation would have to be indoors.  Perhaps, they plan to put a small part indoors that will remain open all year.

Looks like this is going to be a somewhat small park. 80 acres is about half the size of Adventureland, which is already small by most standards. Let's hope they go the Holiday World route, and get some killer CCIs and offer service where they can't afford (or have the room) to offer thrills.

Joe C - I'm sure you didn't mean it the way it sounded but I feel HW offers BOTH service AND thrills!
From the sounds of it, they don't mean the park itself, but the movie theatre complex will be year round.  And as for this being tentative...they already have a layout and theme, etc made up....they just won't release it to the GP yet.          :( Soon though from what I have heard.

I think it is a good idea but I think they should build it out around Mahoney State Park since there seems to be more room out there to expand and you could better tap the potential in Lincoln.

Your opinions

Well I thought that Henry Doorly Co was going to build a park out on the Interstate between Omaha and Lincoln where they have their baby facility and where the SAC Musueum is.  Oh well, I too thought that would be the place to build.  I guess they think this location will help revitalize that area.  IMHO they are going to wind up land locked like Peony Park was.

That is great news! Finally we may get a park.

Wouldn't you think that Cedar Fair would buy the park more so than Six Flags?

Does anyone know anything about Minards experience in the amusement business?

The timing seems unrealistic when the location is not yet confirmed and no permits have been applied for.

Well maybe, but since they are looking at Adventureland (from what I hear) why would they want this one too?  I mean they would be competing with themselves with lots of parks in the same neighborhood (WOF, VF, CS:MOA, and ADVLand)

Swoosh where did you hear Cedar Fair was looking at Adventureland?  That would be great for Adventureland because they need to put in some sort of thrill ride or rollercoaster to keep people coming back.  I know they are putting in a water ride this year but they need a new thrilling rollercoaster.

It's not been confirmed, and I don't remember where I heard it.  But from what I remember, the owners of Adventureland aren't too keen about selling the park.  However if CF:LP offered the right price, I would expect them to sell.

Is there any info on what kind of coasters there will be?  I live in Lincoln and I would drive up there every day if the park had a good CCI.

About a year ago here in Cleveland, there was an article in the paper about how somewhere (not sure if it was in Cleveland) a crew was able to build an entire multilevel house completely in one day (not counting the basement/foundation) so anything is possible with coordination (so long as the cement is dry) :)

Obviously you don't do heavy construction or have to obtain development and construction permits like I do.

The building a house in a day trick has been done many times before.  You spend 6 months getting the permits for the development in which the house stands.  You also spend a lot of time putting in streets, sewers, water, and electricity.  This often happens years before the house is built.  You then spend several weeks getting the permits for the house.  This is much easier than getting the permits for an amusement park.  You also spend several weeks getting the materials together and organizing the job.  You also use an abnormal foundation type or cheat and pour the concrete before hand since it takes time to cure.  Finally the big day comes and in one day you "build" a house using about twice the labor cost that would normally be required since people are always in each other's way.  Since your labor costs are high, you have to sell the house for less than it cost to build unless the labor was donated for charity as is often the case.

In short it's a trick not a real way to build something.  It's like pulling quarters of a kid's ear.  It's a neat trick, but it's not a way to make money.

Developers are always floating trial baloons like this, but most of them never happpen.  I hope for the sake of Omaha enthusiasts the it does happen some day, but don't hold your breath.
