I thought of this too - but a little different. Have them run in opposite directions, racing right at each other - then at the last second, they turn away. Use "face off" style seats, so that you get this "head on collision" effect on both the forwards and backwards trips. My other idea is having an inline twist on the flat section of the track.
Ohhh ! Even better - have the twist right as they turn away from each other - so they "twist away" rather than turn away. That would probably help maintain speed better as well as make for less of a jerky ride.
