"New" coaster movie... (shameless plug)

<plug type="shameless">
I had my Holiday World "Sleigh Ride" video available on my web site for a limited time that turned out to be nearly two years. I finally decided to rotate it out.

The new movie is a project I took on for the heck of it circa 1999.

It's on my web page:

...In the "Adventures" section:

...on the featured video page:

Enjoy! </plug>

Dave: Doesn't Cleaner-EZ crop? You've got a lot of noise around the edges.

I think it will crop, but I stuck with the full frame. I figured I was fortunate to get a reasonable-looking Quicktime movie out of it to begin with. :) (What I have isn't Cleaner 5; it's Cleaner EZ, the "lite" version shipped with Avid XDV. The version that won't do MPEG-2 compression.)

For the non-video geeks out there, the noise around the edges, particularly at the bottom of the frame, is par for the course in VHS production. It's actually head-switching noise from the video player. Normally you don't see it because it's hidden behind the plastic frame around your TV screen. What you see on the web page is a 1/2-size (in both dimensions, so it's quarter-screen) image of the entire screen, including the overscan area.

Jeff is right, technically I should probably cut that down to 288x216. Maybe if I get ambitious I will. :)

Not really, Dave. I export a QT reference from Avid and load that into Cleaner. That makes the source 720x480, and I crop and set the size for 320x240 deinterlaced. If you look at various video clips in GTTP's gallery, that's what I did.

That's more or less what I did as well...but you have to consider the source (I actually use "send to..."). But 320x240, if you resize, doesn't require any cropping. And deinterlacing comes with the territory at that size. At 320x240 you get every other pixel of the DV frame. If your source material is DV, that's great.

My source material happens to be on an S-VHS tape, and it has switching noise in the lower part of the picture. On a TV screen, you wouldn't notice it, but because the computer screen is full-frame (not masked by the TV bezel), it shows up and is quite obvious.

Hook your DV gear into a TV set some time and notice how much smaller the frame is when you watch it that way, Jeff! :)

Of course, I still wonder why DV is 720 x 480 instead of 720 x 525, but that's another story...

The GTTP video is from VHS source.

I suppose DV doesn't need the other 45 lines because it isn't driving sync.

Cool tune and video! Thanks!
It brings tears to my eyes to see the CP Blue Streak in its former glory. Very nice; thanks for sharing.
