Need help moving RCT to new PC

TiggerMan's avatar
I just purchased a new PC and am trying to "move" RCT from my old PC to my new one.  Unfortunately, no matter how I install RCT, it refuses to acknowledge the progress I made.  I've tried a clean install and then copying the saved  games/scenarios, and I've tried just moving the whole game from the old PC to the new PC and manually moving the registry keys.

Is there some other file or registry keys I'm missing that will allow me to move my "progress" in the game over as well?

Hmmm. Try the following:

COMPLETELY uninstall RCT. Delete the registry keys, delete the install folder, everything.

Reinstall RCT. Don't run it.

Patch to the latest and greatest version.

Copy your old save files into the Save folder.

Run RCT.

I've found that this usually, but not always, works. If it doesn't, there are sites out there that have saved games that are NEARLY done. Basically you load the saved game, wait a few seconds, and POOF, you "win" the scenario. Make note of the games you've won, and load those to re-win them. I had to do that last time I installed RCT myself. If you can't find appropriate savefiles, email me and I'll send them to you directly, I saved them for future use ;)

My page  My other page  And my coaster page

Also if you check out the offical RTC site there is a work-around listed.  It's not specifically for a move from one PC to another but it does involve repairing a corrupt completed scenarios list.

www.rollercoastertycoon.com under downloads/patches.  The explaination is towards the bottom of the page.

Hope this helps.

just get a trainer and "complete scenario" till you get to where you  wanna be.  Or does that not work?

Curtis...

I already checked out the RCT site and saw the information/help they had there.  I was unable to get that to work, but doing some research today, I found out that the patch/utility they have there only works if you install RCT in the "default" directory that comes with the install.  I, like most intelligent people, put RCT in a directory that made more sense.  I'm going to try a few things tonite and see what happens.

Does anyone know if there are any other registry keys that are used by RCT other than the "Fish Technologies" one and the 4 file associations?

I suggest reading the RCT Troubleshooter's guide in the RCT Station Knowledge Base (http://rct.gametropics.com/knowledgebase.shtml).  Scroll down the page, and there is a bunch of help on moving your scenario progress to a new machine.

find the file RCT.EXE, back it up, then move it to the same place on the new computer, it will ask you if you want to replace the existing file, click yes, then run RCT, it will definitely work

i found it on http://rct.gametropics.com (RCT Station)
