My thoughts on No Limits 1.6

Sure 1.6 wasn't exactly a whole new game or anything (at $15 you wouldn't expect it to be). But it really does add quite a lot of neat features, some of which aren't extremely noticeable at first (particularly in the editor).

I'll tell you what makes me feel ripped off. I paid $10 for a "booster" pack for a game called Battlefield 2. It only added about three maps and some new vehicles, which I was pretty excited about. However, it appears EA/DICE has absolutely crappy quality assurance as the game just constantly hung and froze on my perfectly acceptable computer that ran Battlefield 2 fine before. Their technical support refused to believe something was wrong with the booster even though everything they told me to do did not work. There has been a patch for the game about 3 months later, but I have no desire to see if it fixes the problem. They've made me too mad and frustrated over something that was supposed to be fun.

So in short, if NL 1.6 added bugs, broke features, or did anything bad, then I could see complaints. But 1.6 seems very stable and bug-free. Not too many applications out there are as high quality. Ole has been supporting this game since 2001 and $15 is not too much to keep it going IMO.

Got the update tonight. It's soooo nice to finally be able to zoom with the mouse wheel in the editor. THANK YOU! That one change is more than worth the $15 to me.

The spinning coasters are fun to watch and the added details to textures are appreciated. I haven't had much chance to play with it, so that's about all I can comment on. However the underground tunnel thing appears to be fairly complicated needing a standalone 3D modeling program to create them. Am I wrong about that?

Hope the Mac update gets released soon; however now that I can scroll-zoom in both, it will be much less of a pain to use the Windows version.

Nope. You are correct.

...well, you could import them from others who have pre-made the underground tunnels into your own creation, right?

...looks like that may be the only option for most of us.

Yeah, at this point I will have to try that. First I have to understand how the 3D objects "work." It's not as simple as cut & paste unfortunately. What I can't figure out is how they got the ground to go over the top of the tunnel. In the editor mode, it appears that they just dug out a trench for the tunnel.

If you guys are really serious about learning this stuff than I suggest you join CoasterSims.com. There are plenty of experienced people that can help you get started. Also, I'm pretty sure there are about 20 topics in the 3D Modeling Forum regarding this very subject so you might want to join even if it's just to lurk and search through the topics. You can learn a lot over there.

EDIT - Oh and DawgByte, you could do that, but it wouldn't really be that feasible since you'd basically have to keep their whole terrain setup and make your coaster follow the exact path of their tunnel. It's possible I guess, but not really all that flexible. *** Edited 9/19/2006 1:41:47 PM UTC by MrX***

...Well, I was referring to more or less somebody who creates a generic underground tunnel with decent clearance for a train coming out of a straight drop vs. a banked turn. This way it could be more easily applied, you just have to get somewhat within range of the angle the tunnel is curved.

I purchased the update the night it came out.
I was extremely impressed with it, and my favorite new feature is the new sounds and new LIMS/Brakes/Friction wheels on the B&M coasters.

I payed $30 for it, since I previously owned the Mac version, so I just bought it new for Windows.

It took 2 hours for my order to be verified, but I was able to download the 67 MB file in about 4 minutes (very fast for me, compared to the usual speed).

I am very happy with it.

Dude! You may have missed out on a discount. If you already have the Mac version, they give you a discount of half price for the Windows version. Not sure if that applies to the new update, but that's how it was in the past.

I really like the added detail on the steel coaster trains. The classic Schwartzkopf trains look great!

Maybe it has something to do with the limited time offer of upgrading for half-price?

Nope, not anymore. They're considered separate.
