My daughter wants a home DDR game, questions.

I was searching online for the home versions of DDR and noticed that they have a direct to T.V. version of the game. No game system required. Just the playing pad and direct hookup to a television.

I figured this would be the ideal one to get because of convenience to travel with it and just plug it in and play.

Do any of you have this version and if so, is it worth getting? Click here for this version.

Thanks. *** Edited 12/31/2004 8:48:52 AM UTC by Chitown***

My favorite MJ tune: "Billie Jean" which I have been listening to alot now. RIP MJ.

Seems like excellent value. I'd be worried about the longetivity of the mat, that's the only thing...

Yeah it does look like a good value, and I think this is something that you could get for her to start off on. It's not very high quality, it even says that it has 8-bit graphics which would be like playing DDR for NES.

If you do get it I recommend getting a useful tool for the job: duct tape. Duct taping the corners down so it can be stretched out and stay in one place helps when you are playing the faster songs. If you don't want to shell out that much money for the game when there is a risk that she may just stop playing I'd go for the one you sent the link to. Eventually you can move up to just buying a PSX or PS2 at a GameStop and pick up Konamix or DDR MAX2.

Or you could be a sick fool like me and build them.

dont get it. it sucks. its not even official konami. i actually just registered to this board just to tell you not to get it because thats how bad it is. get the PS2 or Xbox version. either DDRExtreme(PS2) or DDRultramix2(xbox). and buy your own pad. it will save you money because that will die quickly.

if you want more information go to www.ddrfreak.com

Wow Rob. That's all I can say is wow.

I figured for the low price and since my daughter just recently got to liking DDR at the arcade, this would be the ideal thing to get.

She is just a beginner at it so she doesn't beat the crap out of the foot pads.

I could care less that it isn't from Konami. As long as it works. :)

But,,,

I might just go ahead and get the PS2 version since I already have that game system. I just don't want to drop $100.

I heard that Chi (droppin a bill on it)-I'm looking at getting it for my girlfriend as she wants it to work out.

I've found a few combo packs out there that come with the Pad and the game for around 50$, but I'm trying to figure out if that is worth it. I dont want to get her a cheap pad and have it crap out on her after a month or so.

I'm going to go check out EB games to see if they have any used copies, and I'll probably save about 20 bucks doing that. I'd suggest you do the same-they might also offer some custom packages as well that can help you save a buck or two.

those combo packs are ok quality. not good for an advanced player, but for a new person, theyre not bad. the only way to get a good pad is get the $100 red octane ignition 2.0 pads. or if you really wanna get good quality, get the Cobalt Flux pads for $300. damn are those good.
yeah. i agree with above^^. if you want a very good mat to last a while get an octane or Fluz or even 50 dollar wireless one like i ahve and my sis has the octane. the 50 dollar wireless one will take moree stomping because it is softer but the octane wont since it has a harder mat inside.

the ones that come with the mat in the game are horrible. they bunch up since there is no way for it to keep flat.

I almost bought a couple of these game systems this year. What held me back? 4 AA Batteries required. I would have bought them if they could plug in.

Don't get it. Buying that supports the illegal/ripped game black market. Find your local GameStop, pick up DDRMAX2 used for $35 and a GameStop dance mat for $15.

And while we're semi-on the subject, don't buy the 100-in-1 Nintendo game controller thingy. Also illegal.

Tommy P.

They can't be completely illegal or Nintendo would have already sued and won. If DDR doesn't have a patent you can do whatever you want just as long as it doesn't say DDR.

yea, but ddr does have a patent
If they did all these knockoff pads would be sold on street corners and not in BestBuy and Gamestop.

The DDR pad in question is not illegal. The 100-in-1 NES controllers ARE illegal, since they use actual NES programs, and there is a lawsuit pending.

As for the DDR pad - is your daughter a little kid who just wants something to stomp around on, and she'll get bored of it in a few weeks? If so, get this pad. If your daughter is a little older and has the patience and the desire to build up her skill at the game, get a PS2 version and a GOOD soft pad (the kind with a zipper and a piece of soft foam inside).

I'm going to go with what Den said in his post. I'm not sure if she will want to work on her DDR skills or if she just wants to play the game.

And FastBall:

I know I'm sick and twisted, I've been called that since I built these and I'm happy to report that for the first time in the two years that I've worked on these pads, they survived a party without one mishap. I took the pads to my girlfriend's house for New Years and it was a big hit. I would estimate that around 20 people were taking turns on it from 7pm to 2am.

Jeff can attest that in the past my DDR pads just plain sucked. They'd last one or two games and something would go wrong. So it looks like I got the perfect sensor created that will last 100+ games. I'm keeping that pads over at the house to see how long they last.

I should dig through my computer and see if I still have my DDR pad plans in Visio. It's some pretty hardcore stuff, but I still have more plans including a "non-lethal" lighting package.

Ive got DDR Extreme for the PS2 and I have a footpad for it. MY mom got it for me from a store called Gamestop. The game was around 30 dollars, and the pad was 20 bucks. But im sure that you can find a used version of the games and footpads somewhere. Good luck finding it.

An alternative to Rob's building your own pads, it modding the cheap ass pads you can get at your local game store.

Inspired by Brent, I mounted mine of sheets of plywood, outlined the arrows with pipe cleaner, covered the whole think with clear vinyl. It works like a charm, is very durable and you can feel the arrows. My next step is going to be adding some foam padding somewhere.
