Six years after demolition of the Rio Motel, the Morey Organization plans to turn the space along the city's main entranceway into a six-story hotel that will be joined with the neighboring Starlux, a doo-wop-inspired hotel that opened in 2000. The two properties will merge into one hotel with a combined 140 units, including 34 from the Starlux, to be known as the Grand Wildwoodian.

There's never been a larger hotel that's merged into a neighboring smaller one that has a doo-wop theme six years after the demolition of another one. Morey's can't support it.
If they could, it would already be there. Figured I'd get that out of the way now.

On the plus side, once it's built, it may become one of my top 10 hotels that have merged into a neighboring smaller one that has a doo-wop theme.
Guys guys, wouldn't this be better suited for Great Adventure? I mean they're both in New Jersey and clearly GAdv is better suited to support a hotel. Clearly.

If he were needed, he'd already be here.
I see nobody invited me to all this fun. Thanks.
All joking aside, if I have already stayed at the Starlux before do I get to count it as a new credit?
Man, this is mind blowing! I mean, they demolished a hotel, which means they didn't need it, otherwise, it would still (already) be there. And now they're building another one?
Mind=BLOWN!

Actually in the real world hotels are demolished and re built many times until they get it right. Check out the Vegas Strip for changes and get back to me. The name the Morey's chose is a working name only.
The problem with Wildwood is that due to the real estate boom and bust period of 2002-2006, many smaller outdated hotels were demolished along with many old school boarding houses in favor of new town house style condos. Nice and pretty, but they didn't do anything for the local economy. Added that the new 2002 opened oceanfront convention center, which created a 'high-rise' zoned district.
Many more hotels sold to developers who demolished them before they had approved CAFRA permits in hand, which presented many more issues such as height, lighting, and locations in the path of migrating birds. The casinos in Atlantic City have the deep pockets to make ammends, but shore towns with limited seasons did not have such a luxury.
The Starlux was originally the 3 story Winddrift. Morey's virtually rebult it and added a new pool, and a 4th floor, and it is packed in the summer, and generates solid revenue being open year round. The parcel of land located between the Starlux and Ocean Avenue was slated for a 25 story hig rise, but never got off the drawing board. Morey Hospitality purchased the lot, and will develope it into a modern property.
Its all good news for Wildwood, which will also have the Shore Plaza re-opening next June, again updated with larger rooms, heat, and its great location adjacent to Surfside Pier. Many of the Wildwood hotels needs some serious upgrading similar to the build up in Ocean City, MD. This is the best capital invesment the Morey's have made in many years.
