MiniMelts: The Next Dippin' Dots?

I was at Six Flags Darien Lake yesterday... and among other observations I've taken notice...

...I've seen a lot of these new stands popping up all over the park called "MiniMelts". In the park, they have at least 4 locations, and a lot of them are where former Dippin' Dots stands were. Has anyone heard of them or tried them yet?

...It doesn't look like they've completely replaced Dippin' Dots as there were a couple of those stands here & there, but the MiniMelts were definately more prominant than the Dippin' Dots.

My questions:
> Has anyone seen or tried MiniMelts & if so, how do they compare to Dippin' Dots?
> Do you think these are going to eventually replace Dippin' Dots?

Well if they taste like dippin dots i ain't going near them.....
I tried MiniMelts at Lake Compounce this year and they are VERY similar to Dippin' Dots. Only they are not round, but like little pebbles. They seemed a little softer too, which im my opinion is a good thing. Taste wise, I don't remember enough to give you a good idea. They were not bad though.

Do I think these are going to replace Dippin' Dots? Sure, why not. Then again I just stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night*... :)

*Not True

If they taste the same, look the same and have the same texture. Why not replace them...as long as they are CHEAPER! Dippn' Dots are WAYYYyyyy over priced IMO.

I haven't tried either. I don't like sweets, period. :-)

If they have them at SFNE I guess I'll give them a shot.

Haven't really had many Dippin Dots, a bit expensive for ice cream. (Heck, regular ice cream is cheaper. :))

I like it how Dippin Dots have been the "Ice Cream of the Future" for like, what 20+ years or so and still haven't really caught on.
Interesting. I looked up their web site at: http://www.minimelts.com/

On the international site, you can see that they've been in business since the mid 1990's. Most of their business has been in East Asia (but not Japan), Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

On the USA site, they mention some sort of patent litigation against Dippin' Dots that Mini Melts recently won. I assume that the litigation is what has kept them from the US market until now. Previously they were doing business as "Frosty Bites". http://www.frostybites.com/ If you search Google, you can also find a copy of the US Court of Appeals ruling that Frosty Bites does not infringe upon Dippin' Dots product design or logo design. Interesting stuff.

It looks as if Mini Melts is now aggressively competing against Dippin' Dots. I think that we'll see more of them in the future.

They have caught on here in Chicago, they are popping up in all the malls now.

Is that a pun? ;)

Looks like the ice cream of the future might be MiniMelts... hmm, I wonder if I can now ask the MiniMelts guy what's going to be new for 2005! :)

All of these rabbit pellet ice cream stands should be replaced with real ice cream.

Notably: Ben & Jerry's.

My favorite MJ tune: "Billie Jean" which I have been listening to alot now. RIP MJ.

So which came first, Dippin' Dots or MiniMelts?

Dippin' Dots came first, but I agree that all those stands should be replaced with any form of real ice cream.

I would hardly call being in the mall as 'caught on'. Especially after so many years of the product being available. There in the malls here in TN as well and I never see anyone patronizing them.

speaking of real ice cream if you are in SF America go to the western themed area and get the real ice cream!!! it was awesome in may. I recommend their cookies and cream to any who like that kind of ice cream.
I hope Dippin Dots don't go away. If they do, where will we find out what new coasters are coming? The Dippin Dots dude always checks out the new rides when he goes to the future to get more Dippin Dots.
Coasterfreaky- when would you consider something as catching on then?
We had 1 stand at SFGAm awhile back and now there are 3-4, as well as malls where they never were before. They wouldnt add that many stores if there wasnt a need for it or a want for the product. *** Edited 6/23/2004 1:35:53 AM UTC by MForcer***

Oh yeah, they had them at IAAPA, taste the exact same, slightly diff. texture. I perfer dippin dots still....

OH BTW, went to some caverns in Virgina, for you dippin dot lovers, 3.50$ for LARGE, a massive cup, biggest I ever seen... I tried coffee, pina colado, and mint choc ( my fav ) , mmmmm.. lol

I love DD's, just overpriced, IMO. Coffee kind sounds awesome though!
Coffee was the best flavor I ever had! It was like, amazing haha.
