As for that $4 million pricetag, I'm sure that includes a lot of site preparation and other things associated with a major, permanent coaster installation. I'm sure a portable version would cost less... I just wonder how much less?

Hmmm...so instead of licensing the design, they just decided to build their own? I don't understand how so many different manufacturers can build almost identical rides. It's like patents don't apply to the world of amusement rides. You come up with a great ride and a couple of years later, several other manufacturers are building the same thing.
I love those things too...lots of talk about all these excellent compact steelies lately...must almost be time for the steel coaster poll...:)
Of course, I could be wrong, but I think that's how the story goes.
REAL subtle differences, if you asked me...;)
I really LOVE Windstorms, and that one in particular (Runaway Mine Train by name, LOL) since it had great theming around the ride...but, in all honesty, I call it "a Windstorm".

Rob, apparently Intamin *claims* that the "Windstorm in a box" at SFoT isn't really a Windstorm....there's subtle differences, so they say, and it's not REALLY a Windstorm.REAL subtle differences, if you asked me...
I think you mean Premier Rides. When I wrote in an article for RollerCoaster! Magazine that Runaway Mountain was a Windstorm sold by Premier, Jim Seay sent us a letter asking us to print a correction. He said that Premier had re-engineered the ride.
As far as the history of the Windstorm, when SDC disbanded, some of the employees formed S&MC and some went to Zamperla, so both companies made the same ride. Premier used to work with S&MC (they built the trains for Flight of Fear), so I guess they got the Windstorm design from them, or he bought it from Werner Stengel, who did the original Windstorm design.

I'm sure if I saw RMT with the lights *on*, I might be able to see some (minor) changes...but as far as ride experience, I'd call it *clone enough*...;)
edit: Since Adam came in (late, as usual), yes, Premier....my bad....AGAIN! ;)

Rob's catching on to this *shameless self-promotion* idea pretty quick, huh? ;)
Actually Gerstlauer did the FOF trains, I think S&MC did track fab.
Rob, yes.

They got elevator lifts, wild mouse turns, huge helix and the best... various tracks effects. Like one of them features a track that... seesaws with the car on it!
