Marilyn Manson banned from Six Flags Darien Lake

Posted | Contributed by Rob Ascough

Invoking a clause in its contract with Ozzfest promoter Clear Channel, the "Six Flags family" "decided to pass" on a performance by Marilyn Manson at Six Flags Darien Lake.

I'm frankly surprised Six Flags would choose to book "Ozzfest" in the first place. The only reason I imagine Ozzy himself is not deemed inappropriate by SFDL is due to his newfound cute, bumbling, "family" image perpetuated by his MTV show. Granted, Marilyn Manson is a far more extreme performer, but the whole package seems a bit risqué for a Six Flags park anyway.

As for Marilyn Manson himself, I don't mind his music or videos. Some of it I think is actually rather brilliant, but I do agree that there are plenty of other folks (Trent Reznor/NIN, Ministry, KMFDM, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Skinny Puppy) who were doing the same kind of thing years before Marilyn and were doing it much better.

If you don't thing Manson music is social commentary, then you just aren't listening to it. If you don't like the shock, fine. If you don't like his music, fine. If your good Christian sensibilities are offended, that’s great. But the truth is Marilyn Manson is more of an artist than 95% of the garbage played on your local hit station

I agree 100%. The same could be said about any of the bands I mentioned above.... but I personally think that if Manson's performance was restricted because of the family nature of SFDL, they should never have booked Ozzfest in the first place and had the festival play at another venue with its full roster as originally intended.

lol... manson has a spiritual advisor in his home (saw it on cribs), and boy is he giving wrong advice. it's quite funny how he just sits there and he is ignored. but anyway i guess i do like some marilyn manson music, but i'm no lover. ozzy is king though, who is performing in the ozzfest?

Whats funny about all of this, is that I specifically remember Manson, in an interview a few years back, saying that he would never play at ozzfest again, because he hated the type of crowd that the concert attracted-something about ignorant metalheads- I think.

Now that his stock has plumeted... well, you get the drift.

His carreer is over. Maybe he should team up with Jewel, and do a hip hop record.

I'm not a fan of his music or shock antics, but I must admit I was impressed by Manson's insight on the media in his interview in "Bowling for Columbine". He came off as a level-headed, intelligent guy.

Ha! I guess you're entitled to your opinion, even if you are wrong. ;) Now, Ethyl... there's a great band!

I was highly disappointed when Tim Skold left KMFDM for Marilyn Manson. He was one of the best singers KMFDM/MDFMK ever had.

If you have a problem with clones, the solution is real simple—Stop traveling.
A lot of people don't like Mansons music. A lot of people don't understand his art. A lot of people are turned off by his stage show. I am not one of those people.

I think he is ONE OF THE best songwriters and stage preformers of our time. He is more expressive and outspoken than any other artist I know of. He says and does what he wants to.

But, he's just an entertainer. He's only serving what his fans will eat up. He has his place in the big picture of rock. You may not care for him, but his music does appeal to some.

I think he want's to be "banned" from various venues (like SFDL) so that people like us talk about it. It's so ingenious. Even if you simply can't stand him, you can't deny that he is a very smart businessman.

"When all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed."

SFDL has a huge capacity outdoor concert.... the only one around. The only other venue that can hold over 20,000 people is our hockey arena. Its VERY rural with just a few houses around and there is a stipulation that the concerts cant run past 11pm.

TTD here I come....if youre running :(

"Having grown up with mostly the dinosaur bands of the 70's, I have kept my mind open to todays music scene. One artist that I find refreshing is Marilyn Manson. After hearing and seeing him on the "Mechanical Animals" tour, I was completely blown away by both his band and performance. I purchased my Ozzfest tix for the sole reason of seeing both him and Korn as well. Now after reading about this B.S. , I intend on seeking a refund as well. The right of the Park as well as the promoter to "Judge" who they find offensive on todays music scene is mounting to nothing but a witchunt. I don't see them canceling their "Kingdom Bound" tour Heaven forbid! I was never from the beginning a fan of this Six Flag park to begin with and at this point never will! I just hope Manson tours smaller venues in the future and gives his fans a chance to see him again in the Buffalo, New York area again"

Fin.

His new album is far better then what I was told.

He even states somewhere that everything that can be said, has been said. So on this album he's not trying the ol' SHOCK ROCK routine, instead he's making more awesome rock music (which has seem to have been losed if you ask me, there's NO good rock bands out there besides Manson and any project concesting of David Grohl).

With Creed,Godsmack,3 Doors Down, Matchbox 420 and all these other stupid bands that don't even come close to rock'n'roll like there was in the 70's, and heck even the 80's had BETTER rock music then what some of these winey punks are pumping out at us.... But i guess TRL is eating it all up, go Papa Roach! go Good Charlotte! go Staind, keep pumping out some awesome rock n roll hits!

And don't even get me started on this whole EMO whiney punk rock scene.. that's a whole nother thread.... :)

This same type of thing happened when Eminem was performing at a concert facility right next to my house. The concert was sponsored by Walmart and since Walmart censors the CD's that they sell, Eminem wasn't allowed to perform any of his more graphic songs.

I guess SF does have the right to decide who they want to perform, but if they new that Mason was on the tour why did they

I have a few thoughts/comments on this. First I have to say that any venue that books Ozzfest or anymassive day-long event is crazy. The grounds look horrible after everyone has left, and often times property damage is prevalent.

I've been to Ozzfest when Marilyn Manson was on tour, and I his set actually impressed me. I found nothing offensive about his songs, and his stage show was pretty entertaining.

His career isn't over...he just released his new album, and it's getting more airtime (no pun) in my hometown than say Linkin Park or 3 Doors Down. I think he's going for less shocking but more rocking.

I believe he has a PhD in marketing (or business, I forge whicht) so hell yes he knows what sells. Many of the reasons people fear him and his image is the same reason his stuff sells. Is there anything wrong with having a tainted image? I'd say not if it's in the eyes of the ignorant.

I used to be annoyed by and hated Eminem because of the stigma given to him by the media as being an angry rapper. After I actually listened to the lyrics of his songs I grew to appreciate his message, and understood why he is so pissed off.

Obviously the people who deny Marilyn Manson from playing just listen to the media because I guarantee that there will be other bands there that are more offensive than Manson.

It's still me, here from the beginning back in 1999. Add 1500+ posts to the number I have in the info section if you care about such things.

CoasterRider511, thanks for defending your opinions.

Jeff, while I don't discount your opinion that Manson is a media whore and is out to make money, as he is, so is everyone else in the entertainment industry.

Not to turn this into an art-or-not debate, but his music has lost the artistic touch it had back in the days of Reznor. His new album is music, sure, but to me lacks meaning. If you want to see what Manson's true art is, read his autobiography. Even better, click around the art produced by the Manson/Helnwein couple.

To me this page, http://www.helnwein.com/werke/photo/tafel_9.html , is the greatest.

*Portrait of an American Family* was Manson's first release, and best to this date. Nothing has been able to top it, but still I find that after my first reaction to each of his new CD's, they grow on me and I love them more and more.

I never bought Hollywood but borrowed it recently from a friend and absolutely loved it, Even with the SINGLE *Disposable Teens* which was made for that purpose, to be a SINGLE and it shows. The rest of the album is great and full of good music/songs/lyrics/etc...

The new CD is no different, I had heard from a friend that it wasn't good, but after listening to it only once, I was sure that it was another great Album.

While I think his greatest works were back in the Reznor days, I don't feel that he's less of a musician like NATE suggested. I believe that artist grow and change their ways only to make them better. As long as Manson keeps putting out albums, I'll keep listening to them, and hopefully see him live on tour without that old hag Ozzy!

*** I know this has gone beyond topic, so I'll add this to my recent post***
I still can't believe that a Six Flags would book something like Ozzfest, I remember last year it seemed that everytime I would travel to a different Six Flags park, that the ONCE ROCK now GIRLY MUSIC band SUGAR RAY was there to perform. I didn't know they did more then hasbeen's at Six Flags ampitheatres!

Ozz Fest has been coming to Darien Lake for years and brings many people with it.

The whole thing with Manson being banned i do admit is kinda dumb, but it is the choice of the park to do so. Personally if i happened to see him riding the rides i'd probably be frightened haha and run away, they are probably thinking of the families, whats Ozzy gonna do? Hes loveable hah not scary!

Darien Lake's Venue for concerts has always been more classic rock with a few contemporary artists thrown in, like DAve mathews band. I think its awesome.
